Rca series m42 not working - MP3 & Digital Media Players

Let's face it, these players are JUNK. I got mine for $50 @ Wal-mart during their after Thanxgiving sale. Took it home, charged it, put music on it, etc -- and it won't turn on. When I plug it in and it auto-boots I can see my albums -- even play them -- but darned if it will return to the Menu screen.

The button doesn't work. Period. I paid a lot less for 8gb than a lot of people here and I still feel ripped off.

    Great job, RCA. :(

i can play songs just fine but it wont convert movies and i cant open all the options like device manager

i get to play music but cant see wut the song is called and it dont load up right is all i see is the time bar at the bottom

My M42 stopped working and just shows the booting screen when I turn it on. Then it flashes that a key is locked, it is shutting down, and turns itself off.

Has anyone been refunded their $$ by RCA? (Walmart has a crappy return policy, surprise surprise!)

I want to organize my songs in folders instead of by artist or song...how do I do that?

With the User Interface on the M42, that is not an available option. The player essentially finds all music on the player and puts each track's metadata (info about each track) into a database. As a result, you can only organize your songs by the available options of the database (e.g., Artist, Albums, Titles, Genres, etc.).

How can i delete all music from my mp3 rca series 10

Check to see if you can format it through the menus inside the mp3 player.
It might be in "Settings" or "Tools"
There will be an option called Format
Select and it "should" delete all music

If there is no Format on mp3 player

Plug it into the computer
Open device through "My Computer" or "Computer"
Select Folder where music is stored and delete.

My computer won't recognize my mp3/RCA M42 series

I'm not sure why, but my computer will only recognize our sons when we use one of the USB ports on the back of the tower rather than the front of the tower. I dont know if its a compatibility issue? Another friend recommended a new USB cord. Good luck :)

plug it to usb device of computer
Go to rca website update the firmware.
Keep it install to usb device and click on the firmware you just downloaded.
(do not remove from usb) You can format and update the firmware at same time that should make it like new.

How do I reset my RCA Opal 8GB mp3?

Not sure what to do about the "not turning on" part, but I have a solution to my problem which was the same as a few other people.

I called 800-878-5779 option #5 (which is their customer service phone number that apparently doesn't appear in any of the materials that were in my package, or in any convenient place on their website).

I have a M4208RD-B which was stuck on "initilizing" and not being recognized by my computer.
According to the customer service folks, I needed a firmware update which seems only to be available through a magical email that they sent to me. The email also contains instructions on how to upload the firmware through a series of timed button pushes.

Here are the instructions included in my email:

M42- Initializing problem or not powering on:
Download firmware upgrade included in this email
Hold play/pause button for 15 seconds
Hold menu button for 10 seconds
Attach M4204 via USB cable while holding play/pause button
This should start the firmware upgrade
Possible an error message of “cant write to disk” will pop up
Firmware upgrade will end with error do not close
Go to My Computer find the drive that holds the MP3 player
Right click scroll down to format, format the player
Run firmware upgrade again

The firmware that they sent me in the email was v 1.7.2.0, which is not listed under the Opal 4208 on the website. It is under the 4204 player on the website.
As you can see in the above email that they sent to me, I got the firmware update for the 4204. I would think that the update on the website is the same as the one that they sent me in the email, but I'm not 100% sure. To be 100% you could just call the 800 number and get your own email.

Hope this helps.
