SOURCE: Replacing bulb in hd61lpw42 rca.

lbcofer,

Just make sure that you purchase the entire module, not just the lamp. Also make sure that any glass is removed from the set. I have a tip at

http://www.fixya.com/support/r4168009-change_lamp_in_dlp_projection_tv

which explains the process and where to get the best quality lamps at the best price. Do not use after market lamps or cheap lamps as they will explode as yours did and do not last as long as OEM lamps. In some cases they will not even be compatable with the equipment. The old adage about you get what you pay for, is definitely true in this case.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating. Please consider a testimonial. Thank you.

Cant find convergence on menu screen

The HD61LPW42 is a RCA DLP which doesnt have convergence. If the convergence is out of alignment you have a three CRT TV such as the D52W19, HD52W59 RCA Check the model number from the rear tag and let me know what the model number is.

Replacing the Colorwheel on a RCA DLP HD61LPW42

A service manual from rca would be beneficial and yes you can replace the color wheel. It is a fragile element made of wafer thin glass. I would suggest a pro due this task because if he breaks it, no cost to you.

RCA HD61LPW42 61 in. Rear Projection

Gray or Dark spots are often caused by parts shifting into the light path . Here is the breakdown from right to left of what happens to these RCA DLP TVs... HEAT.
1. The Lamp. There is a fan that operates near the lamp as long as there is heat detected by a thermal
sensor.
2. Heat shield glass. This is a 19mm x 19mm x 1mm thick heat absorbing/reflecting glass that keeps
HEAT and Infrared from passing into the light engine
3. The color wheel. A 120 rpm motor with Red, Green, Blue Glass triangular pieces glued to a hub with
a position sensor that reports to the light engine what color is currently in the light path.
4. Mirror tube. A fragile arrangement of front surface mirrors glued together to amplify the incoming light.

Most people realize a problem is developing when they start to hear a grinding noise progressively
getting worse. What has happened is that the heat Glass has a hairline crack through it. This allows the heat generated by the lamp to heat up the lubrication on the color wheel motor and breaks it down. The glued glass filters can fly off when exposed to prolonged heat killing the balance and function of the wheel. Next thing effected by heat transmission is the mirror array (my term). Other people have found a high temp superglue that could be used to hold the mirrors together, The problem here is that it can be difficult to position these small pieces together, fit them into the bracket, and not cloud the inside surfaces with the glue. Not impossible just difficult.

People have replaced the color wheel, not too difficult to do, remove a harness and three screws replacement part found online from 2-3 suppliers for around $179.00. The Problem I see is that if you do not find the cause of the failure, (short of actual motor wear) if heat related,
Your part WILL fail
again
.

What my problem is I cant find anyone who can get the Heat Glass with the specs found in #2. I have been told by repair shops that it is a part of the whole light engine and cannot be bought separately. The whole light engine, If you could even find one around $700.00

FYI: The Light Engine is manufactured by InFocus for RCA

Editorial:
It should be noted that These RCA TV's and many other models have limited production runs and rarely made enough parts for repairs. As with many electronic products, design flaws don't show up until long after warranties run out. Instead of redesigning a flaw in the next production run and trying to perfect a product we the manufacturer just go and make something totally new with a new set of problems. Ok I'm done complaining

Turning on but no picture at all

I would check to see if the lamp is actually comming on before anything else. The color wheel won't cause a loss of picture. Here is a link to purchase a suitable replacement lamp for the TV. It is 300 dollars less than the RCA version. http://www.partstore.com/Part/Thomson/RCA/HD61LPW42/Lighting+Technologies+International/LTI/260962RL/New.aspx
