Question about Microwave Ovens

Open Question

I have a Panasonic microwave oven with a blown magnetron The magnetron is a 2M261-M32. I also have a spare Sharp magnetron 2M253H(L). I cannot find the characteristics of either magnetron to determine if I can replce the Panasonic magnetron with the Sharp magnetron. Any advice?

As I have received no replies, I decided to just give it a go and replace the Panasonic magnetron with the Sharp.... and it works perfectly.

    Hi Doug

Saw you post on replacing the Panasonic Magintron… I have a similar problem with my Panasonic Microwave oven. Turn it on for 10 seconds and it stays on for about 6 and cuts off. If I disconnect the Magnitron it stays on for the full cook time (of course nothing cooks). Heck of a time finding the 2M261-M32 replacement part but I see that you replace yours with a more generic Sharp 2m253H(L) model. Hmmm you say it works ok? Do the attachment (screw) locations etc all lined up also?

    Thanks in advance.

Panasonic error codes h97 h98

If it is displaying error H97, or h98, this generally means that the invertor(power supply Panasonic part number: Z606YM300BP,) is not functioning. The magnetron may also be faulty.

Here is some more information about the part. The microwave may also have a faulty magnetron. If you are unsure, then you should get someone to look at the unit for you before you go buying parts.

BEWARE... VOLTAGES INSIDE MICROWAVES CAN KILL

Panasonic part number: Z606YM300BP, supersedes all previous versions of the inverter used with the 2M261-M32J This Inverter is now available at a lower cost, it used to be £60.00 plus VAT and delivery trade price.
This inverter is fitted to many of the more recent Panasonic inverter type microwaves such as the NNC596S .Some microwaves such as Bosch and Siemens also use this inverter as they are rebranded Panasonic ovens. These ovens are upmarket models, some include advanced functions such as steaming and are normally well worth repairing.
The inverter as fitted to earlier ovens with the 2M236-M42 and 2M236-M1 is also available.

An inverter microwave oven is one without a high voltage transformer You will know you have one as it is not extremely heavy at one end. This type of microwave uses a high power DC converter, called an inverter, to produce the high voltage and filament voltage required by the magnetron.
If you purchase this item for replacement in your microwave then we recommend that you do this only if you are qualified and aware of the dangers of tampering with electrical equipment.
Failure of the magnetron is common and at times the inverter can fail as well. Sometimes the inverter fails on it's own. If your microwave blows the 10 amp mains input fuse as the cooking cycle starts then you probably need a new inverter. An instruction sheet with basic guidelines on fitting will be provided but please do not purchase this item unless you are confident about fitting it. We only accept returns if the inverter supplied is defective which is extremely unlikely.
If you have one of these ovens that is not cooking then it is worthwhile looking at the magnetron. It often shows signs of distress through overheating.

As well as the inverter failing it is also possible you could also have a defective magnetron,

My Panasonic NN- 553BF microwave oven is not heating but all the lights and everything else works

HI. in most cases, this will lead to a failed Heating device(magnetron tube). It would be wise to check the Magnetron cutoff fuse to be sure of its integrity. if the fuse is blown, simply replace it. if the fuse continues to show continuity, replace the magnetron.
(((The fuse is located inside the unit along side the magnetron)))

My Panasonic Microwave Genius 1300W will not heat up the food and the rotate dish spins and the sensor reheat will not heat up the food. Nor cook Pop Corn when pressing the buttons to 2:00 cook time. I...

Sounds like the magnetron has failed. This is the component that produces the microwaves that heats the food.

The cost of the magnetron is about 95% of the cost of a microwave oven. Most people don't, for this reason, replace the magnetron, they replace the whole oven which is probably what you will end up doing.

There is a possibility that the circuit that provides power to the magnetron is faulty and you need to take it apart, find the proper electrical leads and test them with a volt meter. To do this you have to remove it from its mounting and take it apart. It is a fairly lengthy process however.

Turns off after 3 sec

Usually this indicates failure of the magnetron and/or the inverter. Neither is easy to test without specialised HV equipment. Often the cause is operating the oven without anything in it. If this has happened, it will generally be failure of the magnetron.

Replacement of the magnetron is relatively easy (about 15 minutes) and the inverter a little longer but if you do not have the knowledge/skills please do not do it - there are very dangerous (deadly) voltages associated with magnetrons even after they have been switched off.

Cost of magnetrons ranges upwards from USD25 to USD100 (from Panasonic spare parts) and inverters range upwards from USD125. The cost of parts is often the reason microwave ovens are not repaired.

Hi there..

You can get a new invertor on ebay.UK from here
