Cold Start with left side V.Distortion - occasional shutdown 2 flashes

As stated above. Old 29" SONY KV-29X1E.

Excellent crisp picture when "warm".

At "cold"-start though - usually shows some picture deformation at theleft side along with vertical blue lines/dots. Stabilizes after 10-15mins and won't appear until next "cold"-start.

Lately though - if the distortion is to excessive - TV shuts downreporting 2 flashes. Starts right up again after a few seconds poweroff.

Any ideas?

Screenshot from the screen just before the automatic shutdown. About 20sec after power-on. No input sources connected.

On the main board you will find a bunch of capacitors that will need to be replaced. Probable about 4 to 6 of them. All are in and around the power supply,

In the power supply section, they are the taller capacitors. All electrolytic capacitors.

I would give you the values, but I don't have a schematic to this TV. Some of the capacitors may even have the tops bulging out a bit. Even if they do not have a buldge in the top, they can still be dry and causing this problem. The values of the capacitors are printed on them. Make sure to replace them all with the same value and ratings.

The inputs you refer to should be colored as follows.
Red
Blue
Green
Red
White
(not necessarily in this order)
These are what are called Component Video inputs and is one of the way that HD capable equipment connect to your television. It will not get true HD picture but this input will provide you with a crisper clearer picture.

Good Luck and Happy New Year.....

Sony KV-32s40 (picture flashes in and out)

YOUR CRT (PICTURE TUBE ) IS GOING BAD . this is the most common way a sony tv crt fails . the tv is to old to make it worth a crt . but if your handy and carefull there is a way to get a little more time out of it . start with the tv cold , remove the back and look on the little board connected to the neck of the crt . there is a control marked "SCREEN " plug in the tv and cable and start it , with it flashing adjust that control , one way will make it flash more and one way less , adjust this no more than you need to , just enough to stop the flashing .NO MORE ! just be carefull the voltages in a tv can KILL . dont touch anything else in there and use a little inslated screwdriver to make the adjustment good luck .... if this answer helped please leave me 4 stars rateing , this high rateing will keep me in the paid answer department , thank you

Blinking picture

TV Repairman came out today to look at my Sony KV-36XBR250 today with the exact same problem - he was able to adjust the settings through the service menu, but said it was a temporary fix only.

The picture tube is going and the Sony circuitry has a "video mute" that it uses when it senses the tube is not warmed up enough. The degraded state of the tube causes the blinking on and off as the signal from the tube wavers.

He ballpark estimated the tube replacement cost well above the price for replacing the set with a 37" LCD, so it's going to the dump...

1. Place set on flat solid surface (garage floor or driveway).
2. Bang into it with SUV 3 or 4 times.
3. If set fails to respond, crush against garage wall or drive over it

"nervous twitching"

"twitching" horizontally stilltwitches near upper and lower edges and occasionally through the middle. the above problem is due to horizontal oscillator section . some capacitor is faulty in that section. if you are not tech. person please call tech. to fix it. it is not a major problem. also please check for little sparking in high voltage section. hope this will help. good luck.

Picture deterioration

Your whole problem my freind is dryed up capacitors. You should go, if you have the technical ability to replace these capacitors, to http://servicemanuals.net, download the schematic diagram, and start replacing the waveshaper capacitors in the vertical drive circuit.
