RCA Opal M4204 Stuck on Initialize!!!!!

I have had the M4204 for about 2 months was working fine it has 893 songs on it and for some reason it just stopped working. It froze up and is now STUCK ON INITIALIZING I can't get it to charge the computer doesn't even recognize the player. I see that many people are having the same issue does anyone have the solution yet? RCA sold out and now Audiovox has taken over. The new customer service dept. SUCKS you can't get in touch with anyone (bankers hours) and when you do finally get a live person they don't know **** about the products. They gave me a link to go to and down load some different software when you click on it you find out the link no longer exists. I tried telling them that through a email. The response I got topped the cake " well why won't it let you?" Well, if I knew the fricken answer why would I call those idiots!! Any help would be appreciated!

when i trun on my rca opal m4204 mp3 player it says initializing then it gets stuck on that screen someone please help me

  • Anonymous Apr 30, 2009

I bought a player that, after about a week, started locking up. And, when I restarted the player, it didn't remember my place. I exchanged it for a new one. I've had the new one about a week. A few days ago, I added a lot of songs to the player. I noticed that the viewscreen blurred the track names together, but I didn't really care. Also, twice the player---when switching to the new track, jumped into the middle of it, instead of playing from the beginning. Then, today, I paused the player. I rather quickly played it, and accidentally paused it again. This locked the player up, and hours later, it still will not respond to any buttons. It is frozen "on," and the computer doesn't even recognize it when it is plugged in. I just tried plugging it in and holding down the play button for 30 seconds. Nothing. I tried plugging it in and holding down the power button for thirty seconds, and it finally shut off. I unplugged it. It turned on again! (although the power's almost gone, since it's been on for hours). All of my files seem to be here, and it seems to be working fine now. I hope this works for someone else, too.

I got mine about 9 months ago, and I've never had any problems. I'm really bummed. :(

Upgrading the firmware solved the problem, but it took some effort.
The firmware update is found on RCA's website here: http://www.rcaaudiovideo.com/product.aspx?product=392.
You must first hook up the player. Download the updater to a file folder on your computer. Run the software....and I had to use one of the troubleshooting tips that is available in the firmware upgrade to even get my machine to recognize the mp3 player. That trick was to unhook the player. Push and hold down the play button as you reconnect the player into the computer...and remain holding the play button down until the player is recognized. All of these steps are in the firmware upgrade program. It's crazy to me that you have to start the program to upgrade the firmware before they give you any idea on how to make it work (especially if your mp3 player seem dead).
Anyway. I lost all my saved media, but the player is working again. Good Luck.

My older Opal wouldn't start. Mine was recognized when connected to my PC so I upgraded the firmware after backing up my stuff off of it. After upgrading the firmware, it still didn't want to start. the back of my Opal says that the Reset feature is to press the start button for 10 seconds. While pressing and holding that button, the Initialize word came up and then went away and showed nothing. I tried over and over and it wouldn't start. Then I thought about it and let go of the start button the instant I saw the Initialize word. That did it! It finished the initialization and works like new! Gotta burn your stuff on cd or dvd often with these types of gadgets though!

    This worked! Thanks!

  • Paula Conn Jul 07, 2013

Holding down the start button on the side until you see the word "initialize" is what gets it started again. Once it is started, shut it off in the normal way. Maybe this will allow your computer to recognize it. Hope this helps.

I have the exact same problem. It worked fine forever. I even upgraded the firmware before when it was working. The other day I recorded a song of the radio, played it back. Shut it off, and the next time i turned it in it's stuck on "Inititializing" When I plug it in to usb the button led's light up blue but nothing else. I know that holding down the play button trick works but i have almost 4gb of music on there that isn't backed up and I don't want to lose it all. Anyone find any different options?

I have a Opal M4204 and it's stuck on initializing and I have downloaded the firmware update and done what it told me to do, I held down the play button until the player was recongized. It's been running the initializing for 3 hours now, it should not take that long.. Am I doing something wrong?

Your supposed to let go of the side button the second you see the word "initialize". Then go to the link shown above and download the software to upgrade your firmaware; then copy any files you can off of the MP3 players; then install the firmware update which will erase the entire mp3 player. Sometimes the new firmware makes the player better! Hopefully it helps on yours!

if its stuck on initialize you need to re-set it. there should be a tiny pin hole that you can press with a toothpick/safetypin or a sewing needle

How to transfer music to my mpe player

What I do is simply open the device (Opal) under my computer. You should see a file folder labeled Music. Just drag your songs into the file and that should do the trick. Forget using the RCA program that comes installed. Just copy music filesd like you would on your destop folders. Works fine for me!

My rca opal 4gb will not add more than 39 songs

hi teddy,

first try to format your player, if it has an option to do that. secondly ensure that the bit rates of the music files are in following ranges: mp3: 32-320kbps & WMA: 48-192kbps. and if u have uploaded pictures (.jpg) files into it then ensure hat they are not very high in number bcoz it can support upto 2000 items only including music and video and picture files.

try these.. hope they will help..
