Akai Lcd TV

Hi I am working on getting an akai tv to power up. Previously the standby light would blink red but i replaced the zener diode at z3 and the capacitors at ec18,19, and 20. Now the standby light is steady red but when i press the power button the green light goes on for a second and a half then goes back to steady red. I have a multimeter but this is my first real experience working at the component level of electronics. Where should i be looking and what am i looking for, thanks. my power supply board model number is mlt166a rev 1.3

Looks like we're in the same boat. I'm also working on fixing my LCT2701TD. I did the same thing: replaced the z3 zener diode and capacitors 18, 19, and 20. The only difference is that for me, the red light is blinking and never turns green.

Maybe we can figure this out together? Would you mind checking if you have a capacitor near the top right numbered EC12? It looks like there should be one there, but for me that spot is empty. EC3 under heat sink 2 (lower right) is also missing. Could you check if you have those two and get back to me?

Also, if you need the repair manual, you can get it at:
    http://esi.fox-international.com/manuals...
    It is slightly helpful.

Some TV repair guy suggested changing the zener diode under heat sink 2. Here's a link to a forum with his explanation (although poorly written):
    http://www.circuitwork.com/archive/TV/20...

Let me know if you have any luck fixing the TV - I will do the same.

    Kris

If Z3 was shorted, there are 2 surface mount resistors that were damaged when Z3 became shorted and they have to be replace as well. The reference designator for the resistors is R65A and R65B, their value is 10 ohms and 1206 is the body size of the resistors.

The problem with the unit is power supply part number,MLT166A.If you can not find one you can try to fix yours.First you have to take out power supply,Replace 3 electrolytic caps EC18,EC19,EC20 all are 1000mf at 16 volt. Then find Z3 on same board,it is a 27 volt zener diode 1 watt, part number 1N4750A.Put board back in then unit should work.

AKAI LCT2715 will not turn on gives blinking

This series of TVs has a famous issue with the power board (part number MLT166A or similar). Several capacitors and zener diodes burn out causing some resistors to burn as well. If you are capable of doing component level repairs check capacitors on the board and zeners Z2, Z3, Z4, Z5 and resistors around them. If you prefer to spend hundred bucks and simply buy the working power board for it - ebay is your answer.

AKAI 27" LCD Power Supply - Replacing capacitors and diodes

Kris,
You can always replace a lower voltage cap with a higher voltage just don't change the rating... In fact you could replace the 16v cap with a 400v cap if it would physically fit.
As far as replacing a zener under the heat sink, yes you'll probably have to remove the heat sink itself if it's blocking. And as for any words of wisdom - if your repair is unsuccessful try replacing the module. Shop Jimmy usually has them used if you don't want to spend full bore and order a new one.
Good Luck!

Akai LCT2715 No Power

I have a different thread going, but saw yours and had a question. Is your light blinking steady and then off? or is it a blinking erraticly or even flickering? My bad caps (15 of them) were all on the secondary side of the PSU. I have been told (thanks to Jaimie Hernandez) if you have a steady blinking, then it is very likely that you have a bad zener diode Z3(27v/1Watt) shorted in the primary side of the power board. If that diode is shorted, it's very likely that 2 10 ohms resistors might be open, these resistors are connected to the cathode of Z3. Also check for bad caps on the Primary side.

I had a huge incentive to fix the TV, it is my wife's TV and she has been in my Man Cave since it died. How about that incentive.

Good luck

TV ON STANDBY MODE

The blinking light on the front indicates a shorted part in the power supply. The power board will need to be replace or repair to restore the LCD functionality.

Flashing RED Light

Our AKAI also shut off & the red light started to blink...got no help from AKAI, but did from COSTCO. We bought the set before the 90 day warranty they have in place now, so they referred us to COSTCO Concierge Services: 1-866-861-0450. We were referred to a repair service & after discovering what the problem was found out that AKAI not longer has parts for this model. COSTCO replaced our TV---talk about satisfaction guaranteed.

AKAI LCT2701td TV No Picture

I had the same problem; the blinking light problem is caused by a bad power supply. It try’s to power up but senses a failure so it shuts down and just keeps repeating this process. I troubleshot the problem and found that zener diode Z3 (27volt 1 watt) was shorted and zener resistor forgot designation (2 surface mount 10 ohm resistors in parallel) were open. The zener is under a heat sink so it is hard to see. Also there were 4 1000uf capacitors that were bulging so I changed them as well. I got the parts from digikey for 20 bucks and its now working fine. This was a lower cost TV at the time of purchase so it seem the manufacture used low quality parts and I would suggest trying to return the TV to Costco before fixing it. Good luck.
