Problem with Magellan GPS 315

I own a magellan 315 GPS receiver and it used to work fine for a long time. Last week i tried to use it but the unit didn't get any satellite signal. I have to let it stationary for more than 10 minutes to get any signal. Don't know what's going on, so if anybody can help me i'll apreciate it.

Re: Problem with Magellan GPS 315

I own Two Magellan 315. They both have failed in exactly the same way as yours, will not lock on too a satillite. I have concluded that this is their design life and that is the end. I did post one to the Magillan repair centre in France but that disappeared. I have replaced the two of them from EBay and will see how I get on with those

Magellan 315 frozen

Occasionally, a unit will need to be reset. This can be due to software errors, firmware updates or simply at the command of technical support staff. A reset either will restart the unit, possibly clearing up any minor errors, or will restore the unit to the settings it was built with. There are three major Magellan units, which utilize different methods to perform this task.

Things You'll Need:
  • A thin object (such as a paper clip)

Using the stylus, tap "Main Menu" and select "View."
Tap "Settings," and select "Restore Factory Settings." You will be given the option to confirm this action. Be sure that you want to reset to the settings that the GPS was built with. This action is irreversible.
Tap "Confirm," and the unit will begin to reset.

Maestro/Roadmate GPS Units
Locate the button marked "Reset" on the left, right or bottom of the unit.
Using a thin object, such as a paper clip, depress the button for two to three seconds. The unit should reset.
If the unit does not reset, immediately press the button again and hold it for up to 10 seconds.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not attempt to perform a factory reset on the Roadmate or Maestro GPS units by holding down both the "Reset" and "Power" buttons. This will cause the GPS unit to format its own hard drive. Doing so will erase all data, including the GPS software, from the unit.

MAGELLAN GPS 315, LCD Not filling out completely

I just got my GPS 315 open, thought it may have zebra connectors.
You will break the wires from the data connector in opening this beast. There is a photo on this site showing the wiring.
It is a wired panel the connections to the LCD uses some super adhesive that gives way after a time. It appears unrepairable.
I have two early 7 inch LCD TVs with the same problem.
There is NO markings as to part number or manufacture so the panel
will be unavailable. So I would suggest to use it as is or use it with an early laptop with a serial com port.

Firmware Update Fails

I'm not sure this will help, but per Magellan (see below), the firmware update must be run twice as your firmware is earlier than version 3. I have a GPS 315 with v2.03 and can't find a cable to update mine. My GPS 315 does not appear to have a cable connection either, just a screw port on the back for a carrying strap. Was your homemade cable wireless? How did you make it?

You must follow instructions exactly to avoid corrupting your unit's flash memory.
  1. Select the .zip file and save it to your hard drive. Open the .zip file using WinZip.
  2. Connect your receiver to your PC using the PC or Power/Data Cable.
  3. Turn on the receiver and press the NAV key.
  4. Make sure the batteries are at least 50% full.
  5. Select the MAGUP executable file from your PC.
  6. Follow the instruction until you see the message Upload Complete.
  7. If your unit's software version is earlier than 3.00, you will be prompted to turn the unit on again and load the software a second time. Follow the instructions.

Case cracking Magellan 315

The only method I have found is with a dremmel tool and cut it open along the original split line.

All the electronics are clear of the case mid line. The case is a bit less than 3mm thick.

The antenna is closest with maybe a 2 mm clearance all round and the various (6) rear conector wires (on the right looking from the back) have a similar clearance but sit below and away when the unit is assembled. Cheers

Magellan 315 won't find satellites.

I have one of these units and it too is experiencing the same problem. I have talked to one geocacher and he thinks it could be the connection to the antennae that is now broken. He has a different Magellan unit and he had to fix the antennae connection. I was going to try that on my unit, but I need to figure out how to open it. Hopefully this helps. If I find out more I will let you know. Greg
