joe just realized that i skipped the part that says "input the routers mac add in box labeled ""repeater mode"" how do i find the mac address

  • katbre Nov 08, 2008

Joe starting to lose it a bit here I can not find the box you are talking about i have found the mac add but i can only c a drop down menu which has repeater mode so i do select that and a box beside comes up but not enough room to fit mac add. I think we r going off track a bit as earlier I did connect the laptop wirelessly but open no security when i do go back and configure with wpa-p it does not work this of course matching the phrase it sees the connection there and it does say security enabled but when i double click on it andf try to connect it seems to fail.. I am sure that i am missing something I dont think this mac address is going tomake a difference i am no expert correct me if i am wrong thanks..

sorry meant to mention running vista on laptop

  • katbre Nov 09, 2008

Yes that works wep 128 open i should be able to use wpa and wpa2 as well i am using an intel wireless wifi kink 4965agn and it says there that i can use as long as AP/router are configured using the same WPA version and pre-shared key (PSK). I dont get it ap should be able to cope with it it has the option to use not sure about versions though how do i work that one out?. It does not seem like i am doing anything wrong as long as both ap and laptop connection is the same away u should be able to go but not so in my case. Am i missing something here.?.

  • katbre Nov 09, 2008

Not sure if my replies have been going through i will do it again..

Yes Joe that did work i am running wep 128 open but i am still confused at the fact that I should be able to run wpa wpa2 aes or tkip as my as my laptop is only new it is running an intel wireless wi-fi link 4965agn which runs all a/b/g/n and all current encryptions got me stumped why i cant configure both am i missing something Joe. Very confused would rather be running wpa 2 aes or wpa at least as i use laptop for very important connections to connect to my work pc from home. very important i have that security. wep is not good enough in my eyes and am getting to a point maybe I will upgrade ap but i shouldnt have to as i know that it should be abl;e to do it..Am I missing something it should be pritty staraight forward but not in this case...Please bare with me as i am not an expert with wireless encryptions Thanks Kev

Yes fantastic I got into the router and I also updated firmware. But when I come to configuring everything seems right and my laptop can see the connection and says security enabled network I click on it and it doesnt seem to connect to it. I am using the wpa2-personal and aes encryption i put the proper key in exactly how it is done on the ap and still no connection what is going on???

Do i have to take everthing back on the ap to dynamic ip or leave as static as what i have done to access the ap in the first place..

Connect directly to the AP with a cat5 cable,
you need to set a static IP in your laptop.
Start > control panel >netwrok connections> right click on your LAN icon > properties
In the main box, highlight "Internet Protocol/TCP/IP ", then click on properties.
Check the button "use the following IP address"
Put these settings in:
IP =
Subnet mask:
Click ok.
Then go to your browser and type in This should get you into the setup page.
There you have to inputer the routers wirteless MAC address in the box labeled "repeater mode"
You may need to update the AP's firmware, here is how to do it:

copy and paste the link into your browser.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

log onto your router's page,, then go to status. there you will see a LAN and WAN section. Copy the WAN mac address and type it into the AP's page :where you have to input the routers wireless MAC address in the box labeled "repeater mode

In that case,is your laptop able to use WPA encryption? If you are able to connect wirelessly without the encryption, then tha may be the case. try WEP and see what happens.

Also try WPA Personal, TPIK rather than AES. Most current devices do not support AES.

So while in theory WPA2/WPA-AES is more secure than WPA-TKIP, currently both security protocols can't be broken (if you use a secure passphrase). And there is no indication, that this will change in the near future. So no need to worry, if your wlan devices only support WPA-TKIP, but not WPA2/WPA-AES.

TKIP is a security protocol, using the encryption algorith RC4.
AES is a encryption algorithm, used by the security protocol CCMP.

It may be a Vista compatabilty issue. I 'll see what I can research.

Unable to update firmware

Your router latest Firmware I can see on D-link website is 1.02
If you are referring to German web site page showing a file be sure to follow the instruction to UNZIP the web_dwlg700ap_v200_r11_0408.bin file:
DWL-G700ap Firmware Update

- Browser starten

If you did not unzip the bin file router cannot run it as firmware update
More over be sure to run the update via LAN cable connection (no WLAN)

But the DWL-G700AP...

Is this access piont connected to a router? Can you get online through the router? If you can go online through the router also check the status of your wireless connection. Make sure its connected and it's getting a valid ip address.

DHCP option is disabled when LAN IP is Dynamic on DWL-G700AP

that is right the access point does not have a dhcp server. that will give an ip address to all of your computers or device connected to it wireless. If you have a modem with a dhcp server there will be no problem with the IP but if the modem does not you must have a router and now an access point.

Factory reset dwl g700ap

I have here the steps on how to reset your device.

To perform a reset, please follow steps below:

Step 1 With the unit on, place a paper clip into the hole on the back on the unit labeled Reset.

Step 2 Hold paper clip down for 10 seconds and release.

Note: Do not repower unit during this procedure.

Step 3 The unit will reboot on its own. Once the WLAN light stops blinking, the unit is reset.
