I checked Canons website and the drivers shipped with your printer ARE compatable.
So my best idea as to what your problem is, is that Vista's User Account Controls is being overprotective again. To resolve this open windows explorer and browse the driver disc that came with your Printer. Then find the installation executable (Usually a file in the first level of the disc with an exe or com extension) right click on this file and select "Run as admin"
and this should give your driver the "Security clearance" ;) it needs to execute properly

I think the setup doesn't work on your computer becaue of the system you are using.
I see you are using Vista, which presents many problems concerning Drivers of new devices.
I think you should check the website of the Printer, so you can consult the download page, and try downloading a driver supported by Visat.
