Question about Mitsubishi WD-52725 52". Rear Projection HDTV

TV turns off and on by itself

At first the tv would go to blue screen for 30 second then go to black where the green power light would flash quickly for another 30 second the tv would shut off and then I could turn it on again for a while until it repeated the problem . Now it just shuts off and then a few minutes later it turns on by itself and then back off over and over. Could this be a bad circuit board?

  • homexprt Nov 08, 2008

I reset the tv and the problem continues. I have also reconnected the cable box from component 1 to component 2 this seemed to work for a few days but then the problem got worse after the two days I no longer got a blue screen instead the tv would just shut off and then turn itself back on 5 to 10 minutes later for 1 minute than shut down again and then turn on again this pattern continued I finally just unpluged the tv. I was told that my circuit board is bad however someone else told who had a similar problem told me he just relaced the capacitors I believe there are three he replaced and his problem was fixed. I don't know if I should do the same if that would fix my problem?

Try doing a tv reset. You may have a short that is causing your tv not to send power to the places it needs to be and it may build up causing the tv to go on and off. Check your connections to see if they are broken or have a short since it is not showing picture. Then try connecting a dvd player or a game to the aux plugs and see if that works. To reset the tv, unplug it over night and plug it back up and see if it works then. You need to let all of the power drain from the tv to see if you see any improvement. Try using this site to see if you can find the manual for the tv to fix the problem: http://tv.manualsonline.com/manuals/mfg/mitsubishi/wd-52725.html
All you have to do is sign up for a free membership and you should be reading the whole manual in about a minute.

The reason it is turning on/off is as follows: Whenever a shortedcondition occurrs somewhere in any one of the several independentsections of the tv circuitry it puts an excessive load on the powersupply. The protection circuit constantly monitors the power supplycurrent. Whenever it detects such excessive current it activates thesafety relay and shuts the set down. You probably hear a relayclicking when it shuts off (although you maynot, because some sets usea silent relay and you don't hear it unless you listen very closely).

So, that is probably what is happening. The fact the screen goes greenis meaningful. Most likely there is a failure that is causing the redand blue projectors to shut down; then the excessive load triggers theprotection circuit.

Therefore, I suggest you look for something around the red and bluedriver circuits - - if you know where that is. You will need theservivce manual to guide you on a set this sophisticated unless you arean experienced tv tech/engineer.

You will need to do some resoldering, check the tuner for bad or poor solder( since you had the blue screen) the tuner heats up and will get poor connection and can cause the tv to act in this way , also resolder any parts that have heat sinks or heat up and see if that corrects the problem , if not then what are the blinks on the L.E.D.?

you may have also have got the electrolytic capacitor syndrome , but you will definitly need to be able to perform tests and procedures to determine what is good and what isn't

are you able to do this? do you have a DMM ?

you can also have the chassi rebuilt for about $350, just another option

  • jason Nov 07, 2008

by the way what color is the led thats flashing?

  • jason Nov 07, 2008

ok ,then this could be the start up circuit , and the solder joints may have just got to hot and are not connecting good or it is a false reading and you may have a bad lamp or the door switch is faulty

you will need to confirm that the door switch is good and the lamp is good

first reconfirm the blinking led by a reset or unplug the tv for a min.

    let me know the results

  • jason Nov 08, 2008

well first try to identify a bulging cap or check for an open connection on the DMM , but also there is a temperature circuit that detects to much heat on the unit , right now those would be the best things to check first

nothing can be determined right now without some tests to eliminate the possible causes of the failure , but some visual and measured tests can direct us in the right direction of the fault

can you do some measurements? or have you done some already?

  • jason Nov 08, 2008

Also just thought you should know that : ALL MITSUBISHI SETS : DRY JOINTS ARE VERY COMMON ALMOST EVERYWHERE
ALL MITSUBISHI SETS :DRIED OUT ELECTROLYTIC CAPACITORS ARE COMMON EVERYWHERE

  • jason Nov 08, 2008

you will need to do some resoldering on the board

Open the tv back cover ,remove the main power supply board, on the main power supply board there will be broken joints in the soldering that lead to the power supply.it will be easily located as u clearly look at the main board area .just get cold soldered on your main power supply board.and let it dry for an hour .refit all the parts properly .and then it should work.
thanks.

Hi, Yes. This could be bad circuit or something (dust or particle) sitting on the circuit board. I would suggest you to just the TV once and see is the circuit board is clean.
If the problem persists, contact the authorized service/ dealer to fix it.

Hello Jeff;
If the TV does not turn on or off, does not respond to the remote
control or the control panel buttons, or has audio but no video:
1.) Press and hold the POWER button on the control panel for ten seconds. The TV will turn off.
2.) Power on the TV and the green LED will flash quickly for about one minute. The changes you made most recently, before using SYSTEM RESET, may be lost.

If the TV does not respond to the remote control or to the control-panel buttons and TV will not power on or off.
• Unplug the AC power cord for 10 seconds.
• Press and hold the POWER button on the control panel for 10
seconds to perform a system reset.

If the TV turned itself off and the light on the front panel started to flash:
• Momentary power fluctuation can cause the TV to turn off to prevent damage. Wait for the green light to stop flashing and turn the TV on again.
• If the TV does not stay on, press the POWER button on the
control panel for ten seconds to perform a System Reset. If this happens frequently, obtain an AC line power conditioner/surge protector.
• An unusual digital signal may have been received, triggering a
protection circuit. Wait for the light to stop flashing and turn TV
on.

If the TV will not power off, press the POWER button on the control panel for ten seconds to perform a System Reset.

Should you still have problems, call for assistance at 1(800) 332-2119

I would not recommend using compressed air or any other method that would blow dust around- since the dust could make its way into the set's circuitry via the grille or vents and cause problems. Use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment instead.

TV Problem with shutting off by itself

Mine just did the same thing.  Except for it was green instead of blue.  The service manual states 8 flashes from the light stands for an overvoltage.  After reading the manual for a bit I realized the bottom row of 3 adjuster screws from behind the speaker grill adjust the output for the red, green, and blue colors.  BEFORE OPENING ANY TV OR MONITOR PLEASE KNOW THAT THE VOLTAGE INSIDE CAN KILL YOU EVEN IF UN-PLUGGED so please be careful and only adjust what is mentioned here.  I un-plugged the tv, removed the grill and the board covering the internals, and carefully turned the 3 adjustment screws all the way down.  I then waited about 10 minutes (don't know if this made a difference).  I turned on the tv, turned the channel to an auxilary input (for a black screen), and slowly raised each of the 3 bottom screws one by one up clockwise until i could see a faint green, blue, or red line (depending on the screw), and then turned each one back a hair until the screen was black again.  Only adjust one at a time, the order for colors are blue, green, then red from the left.  I hope this fixes your problems.  Be careful when working inside a tv,  I suggest not using a screw driver to adjust the screws due to the possibility of it slipping and someone getting hurt.
