I have a Brother model MFC-685cw. The piece that looks a little like a short fork with the handel bent, it is named WHITE SHOE. It aids in the feed of paper from the paper tray. Mine has come loose, and I have not been able to see where it attaches. Can you help me?

I am not able to use the machine. I would like a refund on my credit card, please. I just found the gift receipt and it is under factory warranty. I spoke to customer service and they said I could not place the white shoe in the proper position and they feferred me to a authorised service center near my home. They will pay for the machine to be fixed or replaced. Please let me know of the credit on my credit card please. My invoice # is 76072, My name is Steven Tretter. My card is a Visa ending in 8303. Dear mrcorvette,
You need to contact the same authorized service center (who provided you the invoice number) for the credit.

Paper jams in back of machine?

you have an obstruction either a piece of paper between the rolllers or the secondary feed rollers are not turning.... open the machine and follow the feed path ...take a piece of paper and manually feed the paper with the machine in the off position look at the feed rollers then the secondary rollers( usually two small rods with rubber sleeves kissing each other ...if you can look at the sides on the machine( inside the cover) see if the gears ( usually white ) can turn or mesh correctly... if you do not see any obstruction then these rollers are not turning when they are supposed to when you press the print button. 90 percent of these problems are paper jams if no jam something is not activating the feed rollers

Says manual feed. Load paper

There is a manual fee slot just above the paper tray. Sounds like the manual feed slot isn't closed all the way. Here's a link to support for your machine: MFC 7860DW Others Brother Solutions Center Note there is a firmware update available.

There are possibly 2 reasons why this is happening.
1. The drum unit may have been damaged in some way but I doubt it. Check fully that all contacts are in the right place at either side of the drum unit. A contact may be slightly bent.
2. Check the Transfer Roller is in its correct position. The transfer roller is the felt type roller that is positioned in the printer under where the drum unit goes. If this has got out of position then that could also cause the faint printing. Check contacts in printer are not bent.

  1. Clean all feed wheels and guides with methylated spirits.
  2. Look for any switch or guide that may be bent or out of place.
  3. Look for any small piece of paper or staple that may have lodged in the paper path somewhere.
  4. Ensure the paper is dry. Not stored in a cupboard in the kitchen or the printer is not setup infront of an air vent.

Here's the manual. Look at page 6-8. That tells how to turn on real-time transmission. You just need to do the same thing, except switch it to off when you get to that step. http://www.brother.ca/en/products/pdf/manuals/MFC8220-UG.pdf
