Hi doug160451,
Could you please post the specifications of your laptop, but if your laptop originally came with a 5 Gb Hard Drive then chances are it would be an old laptop and you would do better upgrading to a new laptop than go through the problems associated with upgrading only your hard drive.
Cheers

5Gb of Hard drive space is fine, but normally laptops with a 5Gb Harddrive would have Windows 98 or 95 on it. This implies a couple of things.

    1. At that time you had to do a few special things to allow the OS to see past 2Gb of Hard Drive space. But I also think the latest IDE 2.5" drives are now fast becoming obsolete.
    2. If you are running Win98 or 95 the preloaded microsoft Internet Explorer web browser is nolonger supported, therefore running flash and java is not going to work either. You could try downloading alternatives such as Opera, where the earlier versions will work and apparently version 9 as well.

At the moment it's hit and miss as there are alot of things on the web that require flash and java and .net support.

Sorry, but your web browsing experiance may be a limited one on an older laptop.

I have an inspiron 1525 PP29L and need to replace the hard drive. How can I tell if ones that are offered on ebay (Seagate, Western Digital, et al) will fit?

Hi, I hope this helps.

Well, it's a laptop, so as long as it say's that it's a 2.5 " size drive, it will fit space wise.

You may need to set your bios to auto to detect the drive properly, though.

I believe that you can put a 1 or 2 gig hard drive in, and the system should recognize it properly right away.

Good luck, and thanks for coming.

N800v harddrive blew out

It depends upon your needs, the larger the hard drive to higher the cost and the maximun size you can install depends upon the BIOS. The smallest hard drive that is readily available is about 100Gb.

I have a Compaq presario V2000. Right now I have 60gig internal hard drive. Is there a max internal hardrive I should purchase? I can buy up to 250 gigs? How much would you recommend I purhcase?

Usually, the more storage the better. You can go up to 260 gig total with a primary 100 gig drive and a secondary 160 gig drive. Note that with the extra drive, the unit will use more power so think about that first.

My sony vaio s460 does not detect the hardrive, after I installed new 120 gig sata, I called to sony and they said tha I need the same hardrive 80m gig 5400 rpm, as the laptop comes from factory, it is...

It may be that your machine can not handle a drive of that size. When I replace hard drives I always try to replace them with the size they came with just in case they do not support a larger size.

Second harddrive for hp dv9010us

hi, hope you are using XP. Before connecting the drive, make the jumper setting of the second drive to slave. Also make sure that the first drive's jumper setting is at Master and not CS(cable select). Reboot and enter into BIOS setup and check to see that both the drives are detected.
Hope this will help you.

What size drive is in it now? The user manual should tell you what size drive it can use. If you are not sure, the best thing to do is to go back with the same size. The brand does not matter. Is your hard drive IDE or SATA? What is the model of your laptop?
