I have a toshiba satelite L655-s5117 laptop and it won't boot up even when i try and boot from windows 7 disk it won't

Probably a faulty hard drive. go into the setup screen and verify the HD setting is correct. save your settings and reboot. if this doesn't solve it, then take out battery and disconnect power, remove hard drive and reconnect. try reboot. if none of that works, then replace hard drive and reinstall OS.

Stop error on sony vaio vgn-nw235f

There are multiple possible reasons for your problem:
1. virus
2. hard-drive malfunctions
3. OS malfunctions
4. memory failure

Try to install an antivirus and do a deep scan. You should pay attention to a boot sector virus.

If this doesn't help, do a back-up of your data, format your hard disk and re-install a fresh OS.

If this doesn't help either, try changing the RAM memory.

If that doesn't help either, it means your hard disk's boot sector is damaged. There are solutions for this too, but I think there is a big chance you won't get to this point.

Have you tried resetting the BIOS defaults? In doing so, it will force IDE re-detection and often resolve vague boot issues.

The laptop turns on. However, it gets stuck at the "starting windows" screen. i tried repairing the problem by using startup repair as recommended on the windows error recovery screen, but it...

Simple test: try to boot from a Linux Live-CD, one like
http://www.pclinuxos.com/?page_id=180
If you can then something is wrong with the hard disk - try to access them in Linux and see if all the data is still there and not corrupted. If the access is difficult and full of errors then you will need a new hard disk.
If you can't access it even with the live-CD then the motherboard of your laptop (more precisely its chipset) has failed and it will have to be replaced.

When i turn my acer aspire one d255 netbook on it says no bootable device -- please restart system i need help please

Hi
It looks as though the laptop is not recognising the hard drive, there is no hard drive fitted or there is a hard drive but the OS boot record has been wiped ( I know this sounds obvious but some people buy these 2nd hand only to find the hard drive was removed)

You need to check the hard drive is present by booting to the bios screen it should "see" the hard drive attached. If it is present, then you have a problem with the OS or a damaged hard drive. I think its DEL or F2 or F10 to access the bios, not certain.

At this point, you need to attempt to reinstall the OS, as this does not have an optical drive, you will need to obtain a USB Optical drive, go into the bios and see that it is recognised as a boot device. Do not worry about setting the boot order, the Bios will locate the rom as a boot device.

Attempt a start up repair, ie: wait until the installer looks for a previous installation of windows (if one exists) then allow it to install a repair installation. If it does NOT find this, you will need to doa full install. If at this point you have files you need recovering, a strip down of the netbook and removal of the hard drive will be necessary. You simply then get someone with a computer to jumper your hard drive as a slave and recover the files you need, as a full install requires the hard drive to be fully wiped.

Replace the hard drive after you have done this and proceed with the full reinstall

You can use a USB boot device, but to do this you will need to have access to another computer to make the boot installer:

My laptop wnt boot up no matter safe mode or the other start menu's what am i to do

Do you have an external CD or DVD drive to plug into it? If so, and if you have a Windows installation disk, you can boot from the disk and do a chkdsk scan on the drive to make sure the drive doesn't have errors. If the drive doesn't have errors, you'll need to do a rebuild of the operating system.

If the drive did have errors and chkdsk says it fixed them, try booting into windows again.

If it still won't boot, do the OS rebuild.

If it reports there is no hard drive, you've got bigger issues and will need to have the unit repaired.

Os not found

when you first switch on, look for boot options and select it, may be F8 or esc, when you see the boot list, select the one that looks like a hard drive, you may only be able to tell because its none of the other options. If there is not a drive too boot from or all options fail, have a look at the bottom of the laptop for a removeable panel, there may be more than one. There will be one which gives you access to the hard drive itself, check that the drive is securely connected, maybe worth taking the drive out just to put it back in again, then try booting the machine again, may need to go through the boot options again to select the drive

Boot problem

If you repair the os using the cd, The personal files will remain as is.But if you format the drive and reinstall the os then everything is wiped out. Try repairing the os, If not then log on using the safe mode and copy your data on to a different drive. Or use a floppy to log through dos mode and back up your data

I've tried to reboot my daughters laptop. It is vista. I held down f8 and tried several of the repairs but nothing has made it work. I tried starting it in safe mode but it just stops. Is there anything...

You should download UBCD4Win and try booting from the UBCD4Win CD/DVDto recover your files. Since you said you've tried booting into Safe Mode but it didn't work, from my experience, most probably the OS is corrupted. Try using UBCD4Win to recover your files to a USB drive first and then reformat the hard drive and reinstall Vista. Hope that works for you. Good luck
