Question about Compaq Armada M700 Notebook

Bios Settings Gurus, I need someone to help me and who understands how the bios works for the Armada M700. I have tried to get hp to help but no go. Product to old to support. Here is my dilemma: I am trying to update my disk drive. Currently there is a toshiba 6gb (mk6014gap) drive that works just fine with a successful install of WindowsXP. I have a toshiba 30gb (mk3014gap) drive and a seagate 60gb drive (st960822a). I cannot get the bios to successfully recognize the 30gb or 60gb drive when installed as a master in the HD bay. If I place these in an external usb hd enclosure, win xp recognizes them just fine and can be formatted and full functional. If I try to install windows xp onto this via the enclosure, it gives me a message that it cannot install because it cannot access the drive. Here is the message: *****Your computer's startup program cannot gain access to the disk containing the partition or free space you chose. Setup cannot install windows xp on this hard disk. This lack of access does not necessarily indicate an error condition. For example, disks attached to a SCSI adapter that wasn't installed by your computer manufacturer or to a secondary hard disk controller, are typically not visible to the startup program unless special software is used. Contact your computer or hard disk controller manufacturer for more information. On x86-based computers, this message may indicate a problem with the cmos drive type settings. See your disk controller documentation for more information.***** If the 30gb or 60gb drive is installed in the hd bay, when I boot I either get a message 1780-disk 0 failure or 1782-disk controller failure. I even have seen this message, disk parameter table or bios error system. I have tried a great deal of way to troubleshoot this. I have tried using tweakbios and have had no luck. I even tried updating/installing intel controller drivers. I even went as far as trying hp's biosconfigutility.exe which is part of system software manager and had no luck. I have updated my bios to the latest revision that is posted on the hp website. Due to the limited bios settings (compaq shadows/hides a majority of there bios settings on this laptop), I need to either modify the disk parameter table, enable lba, enable udma, or enable both lba and udma. As you can see it is getting to the fact that it is all relative to the bios of the m700. On another note, I can take the 30gb & 60gb drive and install it into a gateway solo 9500 with pheonix bios and have no problems with the drives being installed as master in the hd bay of the gateway. I am not happy with the fact that compaq had to limit bios settings on this model. I think these are great compact computers, but **** when it comes to dealing with the bios. Please Help, 348patterson

I had similar problem few years ago.
On the hard drive manufacturer site you should find utility which will "cheat" your laptop bios and control the hard drive bypassing the bios.

Error Message: F12=Network Service Boot

The BIOS may have reset to the default settings. Sounds like this was originally a workstation on a Corporate Domain Network. Access the BIOS and reset the boot order for CD first, then Hard Drive - you can even disable Network as a boot option. Power spike won't affect the Hard Drive contents, but it can reset a BIOS. Your win2000 should be intact.

How do you pass a power-on password compaq m700 laptop

you have to go inside the bios and stop it, this is for security reason, but if you cannot go inside the bios, this need to call the compaq so they give you a new password to open it, otherwise you will end with opening the laptop and try to hack the Bios which i donot advice you.

Is there a removable bios battery? If not, try removing the regular battery for a day or so to try and clear out bios.

Ricky, I had a similar problem which I overcame by getting a softpaq from Compaq for.

Go to:

and download sp22442.exe (2.5 MB) - this should hopefully fix it for you. Chris

    Hello,

My name is Vikram Kumar Thumu, from India-Hyderabad. I have seen your message on the issue related to Display issue. . I would like to provide my suggestions on the issue. I hope that this should work for you and will resolve the issue.

To isolate and to resolve the issue please try below solutions....

***NOTE** Before starting below solutions I recommend you to RESEAT RAM in your PC, since it might help in resolving issue. Mostly issue related to display could cause of bad RAM.

    Solution 1:
    -----------------
Please Restart your notebook and then use the Flash light( Torch light) to check if you can see any image on screen . If no image is seen , then it could be issue with Display screen or an issue with Operating System.

To confirm the issue, please once again restart the PC and then tap F10 key to boot the PC in to BIOS. Now, please check the issue even in BIOS, use same Flash light to check if there is any visible characters in BIOS.

if you are able to see characters in BIOS, then it confirms that is an fault with OS,,, then go ahead try BIOS Update, BIOS default... if the issue still persists use the recovery disk and reinstall the OPERATING SYSTEM in your PC.

If you do not see any Characters in BIOS, then it confirms that it is an fault with NB,(Notebook) please contact HP on this issue for SERVICE OF NB.(,(Notebook)
