Question about Compaq Armada M700 Notebook

2 Answers

Bios Settings Gurus, I need someone to help me and who understands how the bios works for the Armada M700. I have tried to get hp to help but no go. Product to old to support. Here is my dilemma: I am trying to update my disk drive. Currently there is a toshiba 6gb (mk6014gap) drive that works just fine with a successful install of WindowsXP. I have a toshiba 30gb (mk3014gap) drive and a seagate 60gb drive (st960822a). I cannot get the bios to successfully recognize the 30gb or 60gb drive when installed as a master in the HD bay. If I place these in an external usb hd enclosure, win xp recognizes them just fine and can be formatted and full functional. If I try to install windows xp onto this via the enclosure, it gives me a message that it cannot install because it cannot access the drive. Here is the message: *****Your computer's startup program cannot gain access to the disk containing the partition or free space you chose. Setup cannot install windows xp on this hard disk. This lack of access does not necessarily indicate an error condition. For example, disks attached to a SCSI adapter that wasn't installed by your computer manufacturer or to a secondary hard disk controller, are typically not visible to the startup program unless special software is used. Contact your computer or hard disk controller manufacturer for more information. On x86-based computers, this message may indicate a problem with the cmos drive type settings. See your disk controller documentation for more information.***** If the 30gb or 60gb drive is installed in the hd bay, when I boot I either get a message 1780-disk 0 failure or 1782-disk controller failure. I even have seen this message, disk parameter table or bios error system. I have tried a great deal of way to troubleshoot this. I have tried using tweakbios and have had no luck. I even tried updating/installing intel controller drivers. I even went as far as trying hp's biosconfigutility.exe which is part of system software manager and had no luck. I have updated my bios to the latest revision that is posted on the hp website. Due to the limited bios settings (compaq shadows/hides a majority of there bios settings on this laptop), I need to either modify the disk parameter table, enable lba, enable udma, or enable both lba and udma. As you can see it is getting to the fact that it is all relative to the bios of the m700. On another note, I can take the 30gb & 60gb drive and install it into a gateway solo 9500 with pheonix bios and have no problems with the drives being installed as master in the hd bay of the gateway. I am not happy with the fact that compaq had to limit bios settings on this model. I think these are great compact computers, but **** when it comes to dealing with the bios. Please Help, 348patterson

I had similar problem few years ago.
On the hard drive manufacturer site you should find utility which will "cheat" your laptop bios and control the hard drive bypassing the bios.

How do i turn off the HDD

What happens when entering the sleep mode is the drives will be turned off and the present state will be kept in memory until awakened. While the system is active the power scheme will prevent the drives from idling down after so many minutes with the never turn off setting applied.

With the turn off drives after the default 20minutes of inactivity that doesn't mean all drives turn off at the exact same time. I've never come across any reference for changing the power plan option for individual drives. But I can point you at the guide for the power plan settings with one instruction on drive settings to apply prior to entering the sleep mode.

hope that helps if not let someone here know.

How to remove a bios password from hp 6720s

Why can't people put a problem in the right catagory?
Generally, you can remove the Bios backup battery or use the jumper on the motherboard to reset the bios completely.
Google "reset bios" to get an idea of how to do it, or do the same in Youtube for a video. Lots of them are out there.

How do I get the battery out of my acer laptop

Your Model of Aspire has a different battery release method, see attached pic on how to do it. This is a pic from your User Manual, you can download it from here Download Acer Aspire E1 572
Manual
. I suspect that the information you have been given regarding battery removal and passwords refers to removing the cmos battery as in a PC in the hope that it will clear Bios activated passwords.

How do i reset my computer to an earlier date?

Most computers have a RTC or "real time clock" in the BIOS. BIOS (or "Basic Input Output System") controls how data gets into and out from the processor (via keyboard, disk, etc.). Be careful making changes. The BIOS is normally only accessable when the computer is powered on or reset, and then only while performing the POST (or "Power On Self Test"). At this time your screen may display text describing memory, drives, controllers, etc. Some machine have a "silent boot" enabled which displays a manufacturer's graphic or logo instead of this data. It is during this time the the BIOS may be accessed. Depending on the manufacturer of your computer, a key (Delete, Escape, F1 or some other) or key combination (ALT + F1, ALT + S, or some other) will be needed. It is required to press the key or key combination prior to the Operating System loading message(s). This can be done be repeatedly pressing the key (or key combination) once every second (or two) during the POST. Holding the key(s) down the entire time - or pressing them too often will result in an error, and require starting over again.

Once the BIOS screen is presented, you will have to scroll the entire page(s) to find the clock. Most BIOS brands have more than just a single page of settings. Using the the up, down, left, right, PgUp, PgDn & Enter keys - navigate to the clock hours and minutes and adjust as needed. Make sure that you SAVE changes before exiting the BIOS screen. Upon exit, the computer will reboot with your settings.

Your Operating System may also provide a way for you to change the system time (and date) as well. Try clicking on the time / date to see if it will bring up a dialog box that allows you to make the change.

I hope this helps and good luck! If my answer was helpful, please rate it "4 thumbs up" Thanks!

Mouse and keyboard have no power

If your mouse and keyboard work properly with another computer or laptop the problem could be :
A) if devices are USB :
- defective USB port : chose another USB port;
- USB port inactivated in BIOS : check and activate;
- motherboard defective : replace motherboard.
B) if devices are PS/2 :
- damaged PS/2 ports : buy a PS/2 to USB adapter for your mouse/keyboard or buy USB mouse and keyboard;
- motherboard defective : replace it.
