Although, many of the TVs in U.S. households may not be able to display HDTV or DTV signals, external set-top boxes are available now (and will be at reasonable cost in the future) that will enable older TVs to still be used. The set-top box simply converts in incoming DTV/HDTV signal to an Analog TV signal that can be hooked up to any TV. Of course, you won't get any of the increased resolution of DTV or HDTV and all widescreen programming will show up as letterboxed on your analog set, however, it does extend usefulness of an older, but still perfectly functioning TV.

    With the new digital TV
    mandate coming in 2009
, there's a lot of confusion about what that means for
your current TV. over at HomeTheater.About.com has a nice FAQ
that discusses how the digital TV rule affects you:

  • mmechanics Nov 11, 2008

The original target date for full implementation of digital and HDTV was to
occur in 2006, however, that will not happen, if present trends continue, that
the total conversion process may be delayed until as late as 2009 before the
last analog TV signal is shut off.
Many of you are under the impression that when the turnover to total Digital
TV Broadcasting occurs that all current TVs will be "obsolete".

    Hello Sofe,

Change the cable that connect your screen with the power socket.

Before buying a newpower cable, see if your PC has the same cable to connect to the power socket, and just swap the cables to check your screen.

Really? Try reading the messages you've been sent.

I've pasted this from your premium support request:

Your TV will not accept an HDMI signal from the Roku box. In the TV specifications on page 104 of your user manual you will note this:

HDMI jack x 2
Note: The Digital-In terminal is not compatible with picture signals of a personal computer.

The Roku box is effectively a PC. It is receiving digital media via the internet and streaming it to your TV in the same way as a standard PC would.

The only way you will get this to work, is with a different type of cable. I would suggest component AV.

Hope this helps. Unfortunately, your purchase of incompatible equipment is beyond our control.

Mitsubishi(cs35403)sound ok but only blank with retraces

Good Day, den005;

Sounds like you a CRT drive problem. Does screen change when attempt to adjust the G2 voltage?
Your 1995 TV has served you well and I think it would be a waste of $'s to attempt to repair. Buy a new LCD, HD TV. FEB. 2009 is just around the corner (for HD only signal).
It sounds like CRT (picture tube) may be bad.

Good Luck, big IRISH.

The tv is fine.We see so many problems with cable provided signal that it isn't funny. It usually stems from bad cable boxes and low signal coming into the house.

It seems to me that you are watchin an analog signal on a digital HD TV, the analog signal is has a standard resolution of 720x576 for NTSC (American Signal) and 720x480 for PAL (European Signal).

It could be worth to go contact your cable company, they can hook you up with a digital receiver which gives a better signal and might even have a HD Signal (this means it has a HD-Ready 1280x720 of Full HD 1920x1080 resolution).

If you really want to use your LCD TV on his max this is really worth considering

Off Air?

The Scientific Atlanta box was a cable box and recieved CATV signals. The Direct TV box is satellite only. You might check if it has a built in ATSC tuner for off air digital signals. Direct TV in most locations offers the major networks in HD format.

Sony KP-57HW40 tv is what we have now and is this a high definition tv?

After the FEB 2009 cut over, your "OLD" tv will nolonger be able to receive OFF THE AIR signals as they will be broadcast over different frequencies. HOWEVER, as long as you subscribe to CABLE or SAT TV (Dish/Directv/etc) your old TVs will continue to work as they always have -- (because the signal is not OFF AIR) but you just won't have an HD picture.

Can you connect to upconversion DVD Player for HDMI performance

The TV supports 1080i so if your hardware is plugged into the Component Cable Connection for Digital TV on the back the signal will come out 1080i as long as the hardware supports the size.

For example, my 360 is connected like this and when the dvd player is in use it upscales from the 480 format dvds use to 1080. More on the HD-DVD for the 360 and how it handles the sizes here:
http://www.engadgethd.com/2006/09/21/xbox-360-hd-dvd-playback-maximum-1080i-via-component-1080p-vga/

Kind of an old article since the newer 360s have hdmi and support 1080p that route.

Hopefully this helps.

This set is not HD capable.
When all signals are supposed to go to High Def., there is supposed to be a box that will convert the signal from 1080i to 480i.
I'm not sure how it will look, but, the down converted signal seems to look good for now.

The new technology is coming down in price and the new features are coming at us at record speed.

For instance:
The new tuners are capable of receiving local high definition stations using rabbit ears.
You don't need a cable box to receive all stations (except premium stations such as HBO) including High Definition if the turner has a "Clear QAM" tuner.
LEDs being used in LCD and DLP make them less vulnerable to loss of lamps prematurely and a heartier set.
LCDs and DLPs are becoming the set of choice due to contrast ratios as high as 100,000 to one and unlimited color.
A new type of set is just around the corner using laser technology (from what I have been told by manugactures).

In conclusion:

Your set is not HD, but, it should still operate when or if the change does take place. You may need to get more equipment to help with this change and it may cost more than buying a new set.
