Question about PC Desktops

Hi I am fairly good with computers but i dont know how to fix this problem. My advent 7113 laptop turns on the power light comes on and they the fan starts but am not sure if the harddisk boots. Then the monitor comes on and just keeps flashing white to black at about a 4 sec rate. Do you have any ideas why this happens?

It sounds like Either the onboard video card or the LCD controller has gone bad. To verify which one connect a monitor to the VGA adapter on the back of the Laptop. You may also have to hit a key combination to swap displays (Usually <Fn> + <F5> but may be different the keys usually have an offset that indicates its function.

If the Monitor displays the same black and white anomaly then the vid card went bad, if it displays a normal screen your LCD controller is faulty.

Either problem would likely need service from an experienced technician

Hope this helps
Dave

Monitor turns off

I'm not familiar with that particular model, but in common with all computers there are a few things that could cause the symptoms you describe.

A heat build up can cause that to happen - like a laptop computer that cannot draw in air from underneath because it is resting on a desk/carpet .. air vents on the base of a laptop/computer should be kept clear. Ideally, laptops should be on a holding stand that allows an air gap underneath.

However, you say that it is only the screen that goes blank - the computer is still powered up. This suggests one of two things.

There may be a fault in the video circuitry (the card or chip) which 'throws' the display every now and then. It could also be faulty/failing RAM which, depending on what you are doing at the time, can cause the exact same symptom.

Just to confuse matters even more, a faulty or failing power unit can cause the same symptoms, though admittedly, it would be unlikely that your computer would remain powered up whenever the fault occurs.

Take the easiest first .. search for 'Free windows registry repair 1.2' and install it. Use it to scan the computer for registry faults and then click on 'fix errors'. If there are any registry faults causing the problem .. hopefully they will be fixed.

If you can, remove your RAM - the memory modules - from your computer and take them to a computing shop where they can be tested. Alternatively, can you borrow similar RAM from a friend and install it in your pC to try and re-create the fault? If you do this and the fault doesn't reappear - you know you have faulty RAM.

It's difficult fixing a computer and identifying faults unless you have it there in front of you. I would suspect the RAM. Take it out and have it checked.

When i turn on my emachines 420 at the mains, the led power light comes on, but it wont do anything else including turning on or off

Hello there, this sounds like a problem with your power supply unit inside the computer, emachines are always blowing there power supply because the one that comes with the computer just is not powerful enough. If you are confident enough around electrics you could nip into maplins buy a new psu for around £10 - £20(take the old one in and try to get one the same size and with the 3 pin kettle lead thing in the same place)if you cant dont worry you can make it fit somehow, dont worry about all the wires that are dangling about ,they are very easy to figure out where they go.I had a emachine computer a few year back the same thing happened so instead of scrapping it i thought i would try and fix it,you take the side of and it all looks complicated but believe me its a lot simpler then it looks(a bit like my boss really!)Anyway If you dont feel like you could give it a go then take it to the shop and they will fix it for you.If you need to know about anything else to do with changing the psu then let me know and i will talk you through it.Good luck.

Two pcs running vista home edition wired to router ok. laptop wireless ok. advent pc running windows xp wireless cannot see belkin router but can see outher router in my area. router is a belkin N wireless...

Check the router settings, if the router is set to only use 802.11N wireless it won't pick up a computer that is using 802.11G or 802.11B wireless.

Good luck

After installing a windows update on my advent 7113 laptop i restarted laptop and some of the keys were numbers instead of the letters that they should be.Why did this happen and how do i fix it pleas

Try going to Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore. Restore to a date prior to the time when Windows was updated. If this does not work you may have to do a system recovery, which can normally be accessed during boot by pressing the F11 key.

Let me know what happens.

Advent laptop 7079 suddenly has no power, power adapter light is on

Is there a power indicator light on the laptop? If so , is it on when the adapter's light is on and plugged into the laptop? If not, try gently moving the computer end of the plug on the adapter while it's all plugged in. If the power indicator on the laptop flashes briefly or comes on you have an issue with a loose power connection in the laptop and need to have it serviced . this is a very common issue with laptops that are frequently plugged in and unplugged as the motion promoted lose plugs and solder.
also the laptop could be in hibernate mode and holding the power button on the laptop down for about 7 seconds should wake it.
If still no power i would suspect the power supply and aagain i would take it and have it serviced at this point.. ALWAYS CHECK THE WARRANTEE BEFORE YOU SERVICE SOMETHING YOURSELF
Post again here if i can assist you further
Please rate if this solves your issue

No signal to monitor

Sounds like a bios issue. Check your manual for resetting your bios to default parameters. Good luck.
