Connectiob problem Have had my Netgear MR814 router for years. Just recently my internet speed on ATT DSL dropped to single digets. When I bypass the router my speed returns to normal. Is there hope or is my MR814 now only good as a boat anchor?

I want to use my netgear mr814 wireless router to connect to the internet but i cannot remember the password

which password you don't remember the Router or the Internet account?

if it's the router- you can reset it by clicking on the reset (very hard to find) button.
if it is the Internet password- just call your ISP and have them reset your password.

Re Router;

Is it properly configured with your DSL modem? Are patch cables porperly wired EA568A or 568B? Is your power to the router good? make sure all connections are solid. Check the cables with lan tester if possible.

Dropping internet connection

Where is your exact location?  You listed ATT DSL so I assume you have ATT DSL as your provider is this right?

I had them for years and I had the same problem.  But its not your setup or your equipment, it is your service provider. You may be on the fringe area of the line signal.  Any drop of power in the line which is already low voltage will cause it to drop out.  The more customers using it the slower it will go.

All you can do is this:

1. check all the house phone lines for aging. If old replace the lines because they cause noise in the lines which degrades the DSL signal.
2. Check the connections at the phone box for signs of corrosion.  Clean the contacts and wiring and reconnect.
3. Make sure you have filters on "ALL" your phones.

4. AFTER you do this( you have eliminated any issues with your equipment)  then contact your service provider and tell them you are getting dropped connections daily.  They should send some one out within a few days to check the signal strength.  They also can check it while you are on the phone with them but not as effectively as them coming out.

Good luck

Constantly losing connection

A wireless router if set at enable DHCP will always asign an IP address to each pc, and keep it, it will not alter until the next time your connected, and even if the first pc that you connected with, first next time, it will get the same ip address allocation. The solution may be that your router is set to disconnect from the internet after a period of innactivity. Go into router settings and look for something similair to (Idle connection-Never).
