Garmin 498 - trouble finding satellites

Unit turns on fine but very slow to find satellites and the last two trips the unit never located satellites. Have checked cable and antenna.

My Garmin 498C works fine for two or three hours and then it cannot locate the satellites. I unscrewed the coax cable and cleaned it and sprayed corrosion X on it to try and remove any corrosion or saltwater buildup on it but this did not alleviate the problem. Coax is not damaged in any way. I am thinking that maybe the antenae in malfunctioning.

My Garmin GPS 498 stopped locating sattelites. How can I fix it?

Power off the Garmin unit. Press on continuously the upper top left corner of screen and then power on the unit by pressing once on the Power button. You should be prompted to clear all user data, or asked if do you really want to start up in maintenance mode. Press "Yes" to reset (warning: all data will be erased and lost, so backup before proceeding) or enter maintenance mode. I hope this helps. Good luck

I have a garmin gpsmap 498, 4 yrs old. I have been loosing satellite reception. I have examined the coax cable- I do not see any issues. Where do I look?

Had same problem,,, you need to perform an "Auto-Locate" With unit plugged in but not turned on, push the Page and Power buttoms at the same time,,, continue to hold down the buttons until the "I Agree" message appears. Then release the buttons, agree by pushing Enter. The system will then go through an Auto Locate sequence that corrected my problem.

Battery replacement now ca't find satellite Garmin c320

I had the same issue with the only difference that I haven't replaced the battery yet. When my unit can't locate or acquire satellites I change between GPS and WAAS mode. Within 45 seconds my unit successfully locates satellite. After some time if I disconnect unit I might have to switch it back to GPS and so on, and so on, and so on. It worked for me for past 3 months... Hope it will help you...

Abnormal Powerdown Error Code

Your battery is dead, which is causing the problem with "slow to receive satellites". Normally when you turn off the unit it will remember the last location and time, then the next time you start the unit it already has the time and current location to acquire satellites, but with a dead battery it has to start from scratch. Check the screen and see if it says "Locating Satellites" or "Acquiring Satellites". Locating satellites will take longer. Replace the battery and your problems should go away.

Reset before trip completed

Hmmm, It has a stop navigation button, and it needs time and line of sight to the satellites to figure out where it is....somewhere in that fine manual that came with the device you can expand your knowledge of the fine workings of this nifty piece of electronics!

Can't find satellites

Hello Ray_of_Hope,

In order to get a "fix" on it's current location your GPS needs to download data from three or four GPS satellites. Typically, this should happen in about two minutes or less from the time you first power on the unit. This can take a little bit longer if its been a while since you used the GPS or if you have travelled a long way since you last turned the unit on. Your Garmin Nuvi 200W should be acquiring satellites and providing a location report pretty quickly after power up.

Once thing that can affect the performance is whether not not the GPS has a clear view of the sky. If you are operating indoors, in a car, or anywhere that has a lot of obstructions (in a city with tall buildings or a forested area with a lot of trees) these things can block your GPS's view of the sky and prevent it from receiving data from one or more satellites. This can cause the GPS to be unable to provide a lock on its current location or to take a very long time in locking on.

Best Regards,
Ken

Aquiring satellites

Are you outside with a clear view of the sky? It should find satellites once the unit is turned on. Does it say "Looking for satellites" or "Acquiring satellites"?

If it is "looking for satellites" then it means that the unit have lost all data (time, date, location). If it is "acquiring satellites" then it have date and time, but not location.

Looking for satellites require a longer setup time (could be as much as 15 minutes). Acquiring satellites is much faster (not more than 2 minutes).

Date and time is updated from satellites once the unit gets a satellite lock.

Trouble Acquiring Satellites

This can be easily fixed....
I had the same problem, I returned first piece and exchanged for the second. Had the same problem with second and took back to Circuit city. The GPS guys took out 3rd one for me and had same problem. Then the manager came who has been using these for couple of years and tried to set the home location 3 times and it worked 3rd time. He did the same for the second returned piece and it also worked. He says since these pieces are programmed for Kansas we need to give 3-4 tried before the piece first 'locates' satellite and then acquires satellite. After the the piece just turned out to be awesome.
