I have an advent 8315 and last week i powered on and connected to the internet when it just shut down. All lights went off and would not restart or turn on since.Have never had the battery in it use only the mains adapter. Bought new mains adapter still no lights or power. My warranty ran out a month ago and my local pc world is being refurbished. I ave no clue what to do

I have had the same problem for a few months now. Firstly the mains adaptor would fail occaissionally and now I have to spend up to thirty minutes wiggling the adaptor into the power socket to find the right spot. Even then, as soon as the laptop is moved, however slightly, it will lose power again. Not sure if this is a problem with the adaptor itself, but having done a bit of research, it sounds like it could be a loose power jack. It can be fixed DIY (not by myself, I have a friend whos into computers) but dont know if its worth the risk to save money. But Im a student in the middle of a dissertation, so its either no money or no degree!

Exact same problem, after 13 months. PC World confirmed that the motherboard has packed up and quote £240 to return to manuafacturer for repair. How hard is it to buy a new motherboard and repair it myself - as someone with only a lowish level knowledge of electronics?

If you have a battery to test it with and there is still no power then a common defect is the power jack itself. You would need to have the technical proficiency to troubleshoot that circuit. If you do not have a battery to test that possibility you might ask a repair shop to just put one in before you buy one as the possibility of a bad motherboard exists. Steve Medley

Could be in short circuit protection mode, or for some reason your laptop is not receiving the correct power it needs. It is possible that it overheated and died because it was left on for a long period of time. This is confirmed if dust is present within the laptop. If under warranty return it, if not take it to a computer technician.

Power light blinking

if the power just shuts off for no reason when booted up,it may be the power source is on the way out ,it will work for a while, but keeps crashing, thats the first thing to replace
also make sure you hear the fans working
if it overheats it has a safty shutoff ,
you can also use a house fan, aimed inside the computer while open, to rule out power source

My hp desktop computer will not turn on

If you cant see or heard any boot up sounds, fans and especially if you dont see any power or green led lights at all ;

If your power cord is plugged into a power strip or surge protector, power cycle your strip or surge protector by turning off and on.

If power outlet has a wall switch make sure its on

Check that your power cable is securely plug in to both ends

Check that at the back of computer, specifically on the back of the power supply unit that the switch is on "1" position and NOT on the "0" position ( 1 is "ON" , 0 is "OFF" )

Check that the power outlet is not damaged by pluging in another good known device (such as a blowdryer, shaver, lamp, radio, etc, etc) to see if its the power outlet or not.

Can you see power or green led lights and hear the fan on but no display ? If this is the case , check your monitor connection at both ends. If they are secured open up your case and see if you can smell any burnt smell or check that all cards especially video cards are properly seated.

Lcd connection

Hi,

It would be uncommon for a laptop not to have a function key, Fn. This would be normally located somewhere bottom left of the keyboard often after the CTRL key and/or before the Windows key. Further, it is often required to press the Fn key + F? key where the F? would be one of the F keys with the small monitor icon.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Hello!!!

Check Your Keyboard Connection, Then Restart Your Computer

Checking the connections and restarting the computer will make sure the keyboard is plugged in properly and the computer is correctly recognizing the keyboard.

To check the keyboard connection and restart the computer:
1. Shut down your computer:

* If using Windows® 98 or Windows® Me, click the Start button, then click Shut Down. In the What do you want the computer to do? section, choose the Shut Down option by clicking it, then click the OK button.
* If using Windows® XP or Windows® 2000, click the Start button, then click Shut Down. Click the What do you want the computer to do? drop-down menu to open it, choose the Shut Down option from the list, click it, then click the OK button.

2. Follow the cord from the keyboard to where it plugs into the computer.
3. Unplug the keyboard cord.
4. Wait for about 30 seconds.
5. Plug in the keyboard cord.
6. Turn on your computer.
