Question about Computers & Internet

Miffed!!! Hi, I?m very knowledgeable in computers but I?m a bit miffed about my own pc. The other night it froze, when i tried to reboot it did nothing. The power is fine but no beeping, no picture, and it doesn?t even seem to load the bios. Sometimes it loads the bios and starts to load windows but stops. I?ve tried: Unplugging everything but the bios doesn?t always load Changed memory but makes no difference I?m thinking it must be something on the motherboard, perhaps the bios chip but sometimes it loads, or maybe the processor but they have an extremely long life and its never over heated and this wouldn?t stop the bios loading. Windows has booted once but froze after being on the desktop for a minute or two. Does anybody have any idea, replies wound be much appreciated, cheers.

i have found that releasing the metal clips that hold the heat sink and fan on the processor allows the pc to boot just fine, the heat sink and fan are still attached but when the clips are put back on the pc freezes, i'm thinking it may be a faulty processor connection.

There is the internal battery if the computer is 5 years or older. RAM can be a possible fault so you can try reseating the RAM sticks or removing one at a time. You are incorrect in assuming that overheating would not be a cause nor would you necessarily see smoke or fire to detect overheating which would shorten that life considerably within seconds. Power supplies are a common fault as well as two critical signals: Power On & Power Good are required for POST (what you are calling BIOS) and can be measured with a meter. If you can access the BIOS setup you can view the temperatures in real time but overall I would first suspect a bad power supply, dying motherboard or RAM in that order and order of cost as well. That would be good news considering the alternatives. Remove the heat sink, reapply the thermal grease, ensure the socket lever is seated all the way down and then put the heat sink back. Good luck, I hope that is what the problem is! Steve Medley

There could be a couple of possibilities. But the most likely one I can think of is a fault in the atx connector(The broad 20 pin connector) either on the power supply or the Motherboard

At most Electronics or computer specialty stores you should be able to get a Power supple tester for about $20 USD.

You can connect that to you Power Supply Unit(PSU) and that should be able to tell you whether your fault is in the PSU or the Motherboard

Hope this helps
Dave

It seem that you need to repair your operating system or need to reinstall it...... You can do this with the help of CD but please do it if you have good knowledge of it...or get it done by some professional if you have valuable data in your Laptop.

My computer is froze on a windows update screen it says t is on 3 of 3. It won't let ne move my mouse and it seems to be frozen what do I do

depending on the update to windows it might take a little while for this to complete, just leave it on for a bit, if it is stuck on 3 of 3 for more than 45 mins then it was probably an error and you will have to forcefully restart your computer by holding down the power button for 5 seconds and hope that your computer recovers after the reboot

Check the monitor in the device manager. NOT regular display properties. Make sure the monitor is the correct type. Try different settings in device manager for the monitor. Maybe try uninstalling the video card drivers, reboot and reinstall the drivers. Let me know if this does not work.

When trying to print, got message that the pc needs to be hard rebooted first for the printer to work, rebooted it but after rebooting, pc just froze cannot control mouse/keyboard and rebooted it again,...

First of all, login to BIOS and disable "USB legacy mode".

Then try uninstalling all of the printer software and driver and reinstall all of them. That should fix the issue.

try booting to safe mode (F8 at boot) and see if the issue goes away. If it does, then reboot in the normal mode see if the issue still occurs.

If it does, try running systemre store to a restore point before the issue started.
