Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

2 Answers

My Door get stuck when opening and I have to use emergency release and start over.

My garage door sometimes only opens about a foot, then gets locked and goes back down. I have to use the red emergency release cord and start all over. If I am outside of the garage when it happens I have to bang on the garage door really hard at the right place to open. This happens mostly when it is cold or if I have been out of town. What is the problem? Can I fix it or should I have someone come out?

First attempt to open on a cold morning the unit reverses and closes after lifting 18 inches. Second attempt and all seems normal.

If it is open for a while, when I attempt to close it (on a cold day) the unit closes about 18 inches then reverses.

If I turn up the load to close, when I hit the bottom the unit overloads and opens. It takes several attempts to open or close on a typical cold day.

Same thing here. I'm scared the horizontal brace is going to completely buckle one of these times. Has anyone uncovered any solutions yet?

    Thanks!

Same issue... on cold days it will not open all the way. Either by doorpad or remote. It will open 8 inches or so and if I can manually provide some support, it will open all the way. Does not have a problem closing. We wondered if it was a battery (but we are not even sure if it has a battery, that is how clueless we are!)

Stuck in up position against unit protector bolt . . . will not move with either control . . . unit only clicks . . . appears to have opened too far compared to other doors?

Der Randy,
If you want to learn to be a garage-door-opener-mechanic, now is the time to start.
I have done a dozen of these like this.
You start by unhooking the garage door from the track, by pulling on the emergency cord that is hooked to the connector, which releases the door from the opener.
( Now, you can work it by hand, until the opener is fixed.
Remember not to let it latch again until the opener is fixed. You must watch it.)
Then carefully take the stopper bolt out of the track, and if it is highly pressurized, watch out that it does not fly out and hit you in the face.
Nope, you should be free to adjust the chain travel, electrically.
There are two adjusting screws on the opener motor that will change where the door stops and starts.
You should be able to adjust these now to get the door to open and close properly.
Once it is working properly, attach the door to the opener assembly. God bless your efforts.

How to open the door if no electricity

Almost all garage door openers have a switch mechanism that will allow you to open the door manually. It is usually a pull cord on the motor or track. Pulling it down usually deactivates automatic mode. Just pull it up into position when the electricity comes back on.

Linear garage door opens and closes when close to unit about 10 '

when the door stops moving when going down, pull the emergency release handle on the door and then push the door closed by hand. Once it's closed push the emergency handle back so it engages the chain. Open the door and close it a few times to make sure it closes all the way with the motor.

I have a Merlin 230T garage door opener and it has started to run in the opposite direction. ie; it is closed now and when I use the remote control it tries to close more

Pull the emergency release handle. Use remote to open door then close it again with the remote. Now re engage the emergency release. That should put the chain in the right position for proper operation.

I lost power last night due to a storm, I have power however my garage door will not open or close. The motor runs, however it is not grabbing. any ideas on how to fix???

Did you have to pull the emergency release and not return this into position. Pull the cord and move it until it clicks into position. Run the door and it should lock into place. If it does not reach this point. run the door to the open position and push the door back until it locks into the release.

Have a Craftsman 1/2 HP Garage Door Opener, been working fine. Now when you start it you hear the motor running as normal but the chain doesnt move?

You must ensure the drive chain is engaged to the door puller.
Sometimes the emergency release if pulled (red cord) the drive and the coupling come separated.
Make sure the pin is back in place (pull release cord and make sure pin springs back in).
The run an open close cycle, it should pick up the drive again.

My garage door sometimes gets stuck and then goes

Don't tighten the chain. It sounds like you have either a broken door spring or the drive gear in the motor unit is going bad. Release the opener from the door and operate it by hand. It should be easy enough to raise that your wife can do it with no problems and it should stay put when released about waist to shoulder high.

Craftsman Garage Door Opener - Gears need to be fixed

Unplug the unit and remove the cover, usually eight screws, if you see a lot of white dust in the cover check the nylon drive/worm gear, they will need to be replaced.
