Restarting the laptop

My laptop,Hp Pavillion dv 5 series, switches on with a blank screen with only a cursor on it.

When i was last working,no program was responding properly, not internet explorer nor the my computer, nothing.

So i restarted the notebook, after which, there's only a blank screen with a cursor on it,i have left it long enough after switching on,but i don't hear a beep, and if i try pressing F8 as soon as i switch the notebook on,i see the wallpaper, with a cursor instead of a blank screen with a cursor.

The only way i can switch off the notebook is by using the button on the laptop,as no other key is functioning, the power switch keeps blinking even after i switch it off,,and when i press it on,there's only a blank screen with a cursor to greet me.

no the computer doesn't beep after i press F8,i don't even think the computer's switching off when i press the power button, coz as soon as i switch it on the blank screen appears,,,

so,maybe the problem is that the computer isn't even switching off...

Is there any way to switch off the computer?!!

If you continuously press F8 until you hear a beep it should come up with a screen enabling you choose safe mode options do you get this, and did the computer beep after pressing F8?

How long do you leave it, to see if it boots? Do you get the boot beep to let you know that is has booted?

Some HP Pavillion DV series have the issue of not starting up( screen is Black), lights are on, then it restarts over and over again.

The solution is:

Disassemble(open up) the Laptop with right tools.
When you get to remove the fan on top of the processor, you will see the processor and next to the processor an intergrated graphics card.

Remove the processor.
Remove the Ram.

What you do now is Get a hair blow dryer, set it to maximum hot air and blow 1 cm distance from graphics card for about 5 minutes.

let it cool for 20 minutes.
Put back all components.

start the POWER. wait and now your pc will show something like magic on screen..

Hi !

I believe that your operating system is corrupted and need reformat your computer. It will not boot to Bios because it is corrupted.

Here is the link on how to reinstall your operating system http://www.fixya.com/support/r7410371-reinstall_windows_xp_or_installing_clean.

My HP Pavillion does not boot up. there is a blank screen with blinking cursor. When I press F2 it asks for a driver disc that I do not have.

Is it saying booting from disk?

Try to turn off your computer for about 5 mins. Once you turn on the computer, you will hear it beep. Just after the beep, press f8 and select your hard drive so that you can boot from it.

Black screen when the hp dv7 stratup

Contact HP. There are known issues with the DV line of laptops. They die......seriously. Ask them if the problem qualifies your laptop for a "one time warranty enhancement". They might just fix it free as there are known problems with the DV series.

Hope this helps! Post a comment if not and I'll see if I can help.

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM.MY HP NOTE BOOK IS HP PAVILLION DV6910.IT,S POWER ON.THEN NOTHING HAPPENED.ONLY A BLANK SCREEN.......DON'T BUY HP NOTEBOOK................

You can try a few small things you could try like reseating the memory and booting without the battery, but MAJORITY of the time it's the motherboard with HP's DV series laptops.

Now's a nice time to check your warranty status here:

http://h40059.www4.hp.com/warranty/information/quickhelp.php

They just extended a number of the warranty lengths so even if you purchased more than a year ago you should check their site.
