Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

1 Answer

PS3 System Update won't work completly.

Playstation 3 system update won't work. If I try and download it by the PS3 itself, it says there's an error, or the connection with the server dropped. Or, If I try and download it and install it via USB, it attempts to copy over the update data, and then it says that data is corrupt! This happens at around 60 to 70 percent. I can't figure out why! Please help!

Yes that ocurs when the update is not downloaded completely and as you have pointed out because of server problems..i had the same problem because of the same problem and had to download the update froma stable connection..i suggest that you use a formatted USB and download a fresh update perhaps from a different connection..hope it helps!

Playstation Error 8002f1f9

The error code is non specific and only indicates there was some issue in updating the system.

If the PlayStation3 system will not accept the update via the Internet, you will want to place the update on a USB storage device (such as a flash drive or thumb drive). You can download the update at http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/ps3/pc_update/index.htm.

You need to make sure the update is on the USB device correctly. If the folder structure is not exactly right, it will give you an error. The update must be downloaded in a Folder named UPDATE and the UPDATE folder must be inside another folder named PS3. The PS3 folder cannot be inside any other folders, or else the PlayStation 3 system will not read it properly. So the folder organization looks like this: PS3 - UPDATE - update.pup

If the PlayStation 3 system still cannot read the data, attempt to have the system update through the safe mode menu. Sometimes the PlayStation 3 system will accept the update through the safe mode menu, when it will not otherwise accept the update information.

To access safe mode follow these steps:
• Turn off the PS3 by holding the Power button until the power light turns red.
• Press and hold the Power button until you hear 3 separate beeps (separated by about 5 seconds) and the power light goes from red to green and back to red.
• Press and hold the Power button again. This time listen for 2 single beeps (separated by about 5 seconds), followed by a rapid double beep. As soon as you hear the double beep, release the power button. The light on your system will still be green if this is done properly.
• Plug your controller in with the USB cable and you will see a menu with six options. For this troubleshooting, please choose option 6, Update System.

If the system still will not read the update, it will need to come in for service. I have included a link with more information on the service process:

Hey fyocksofresh,

If performing a system update with your PS3 fails, you may wish to try updating using a USB flash drive and your home computer instead. In order to do so, you'll need to create the following folders on the flash drive itself:

PS3 > Update

Once this is done, you'll want to visit the website I've provided below to download the most recent software version. The link should be easily found under the "Download the System Software" heading on the page.

http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/playstation.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=275

Once you've downloaded the file and transferred it onto the USB flash drive, connect the flash drive to your PS3 and choose "Update via Storage Media" instead of the normal internet option.

In the event that updating the software this way doesn't work, there are a couple of things you may wish to try before attempting again.

1) Delete all the cache files and cookies from your PS3's internet browser.

2) Power cycle your PS3 (turn it off completely, then back on) before attempting again.

3) Restore the default PS3 system settings. This should clear any potential problems that may be caused by your current system software version.

If none of these help, I'd strongly suggest contacting Sony for more information. You should be able to do so by calling their toll-free hotline at 800-345-SONY (800-345-7669) or by filling out an online repair request form.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron

Updating PS3 .PUP file

Update data download procedure
  1. Create a folder on the storage media in which to save the update data.
Using a PC, create a folder named “PS3” on the storage media or USB device. Within the PS3 folder, create a folder named “UPDATE”.

  2. Download the update data and save it in the UPDATE folder created in step 1.
    btn_download_up.jpg
Notice Be sure to save the update data as noted below. If the data is not saved in the correct way, the PS3™ system will not recognize the update data. The folder name must be in all uppercase letters.
  • Location: Save in the “PS3” folder > “UPDATE” folder
  • File name: Save as file name “PS3UPDAT.PUP”.
Update procedure Notices
  • Do not turn off the PS3™ system or remove the storage media or USB device during an update. If an update is cancelled before completion, the system software may become damaged, and the system may require servicing or exchange.
  • The power button on the PS3™ system front is not active during an update.
  1. Insert the storage media or USB device that contains the update data in the PS3™ system.
  2. From the home menu, select icn_settings.gif (Settings) > icn_ntwkupdate.gif (System Update), and then press the x_button.gif button.

  3. Select [Update via Storage Media], and then press the x_button.gif button.

    viamedia.jpg
The system automatically searches for and finds the update data saved on the storage media or USB device.
  4. Start the update data.

    network_update.jpg
Press the x_button.gif button to start the update data. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.
  5. Confirm that the update was successful.
After the update has been completed, go to icn_settings.gif (Settings) > icn_ps3_systemsettings.gif (System Settings) > [System Information]. If the System Software field displays the version number of the update, the update was successful.

Ps3

Download the system update from another place. Once the file on the PS3 is corrupted or incomplete it will only try that file.

You can install the system update using your PC by downloading the update to a USB stick or Memory Stick.

Get the system update here.
