I was typing a word document and the computer froze. I rebooted. When it came back on it has a black screene with options to log in in 3 different safe modes. Help!!!!!!!!!

You should also have an option to start Windows normally - if not power down and restart the machine. This screen has shown up because Windows thinks something has gone wrong.
Something might have gone wrong but it is worth a simple restart first.
Please let me know how it goes.

My computer no longer "sees"

hello
at end of this instruction set, see link to review more questions/answers,as your issue with CD/DVD ROM will vary .

This document applies to HP and Compaq desktop computers with Windows XP, Me, and 98. Use this document to make Windows and the CD writing software recognize the CD or DVD writer drive. Start at Step 1; do not skip to other sections until Step 1 has been completed. Step 1: Does Windows detect the CD or DVD drive? Use Device Manager to determine if Windows is recognizing the drive:
  1. In Windows XP, click Start , and right-click My Computer . In Windows 98 and Me, right-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
  2. In Windows XP, select Properties , click the Hardware tab, and then click the Device Manager button. In Windows 98 and Me, select Properties , and click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Click the plus sign (+ ) next to DVD/CD-ROM Drives (or similar) category.
  4. Do the following depending on what is listed in the DVD/CD-ROM drives category:
    • If the CD or DVD drive name is missing , the drive is not being detected by Windows. Close Device Manager and skip to the section CD or DVD drive is not recognized by Windows .
    • If a drive name is shown but is disabled (icon is marked with a red X, c00877300.gif ), the drive has been disabled. Right-click the drive name and select Enable . You may have to restart the computer to complete the enabling process. The drive should work correctly once it has been enabled. NOTE: If the drive cannot be enabled, a required service or driver that the drive needs is not functioning or has been disabled. Click the plus sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and troubleshoot any problems found according to any error codes in Device Manager. Resetting the BIOS may also resolve this problem.
    • If a drive name is shown but contains an alert icon (an icon marked with an alert symbol, c00877301.gif ), then use the section Using Device Manager error codes to troubleshoot the problem. You may also use the next section Disc burning software does not recognize the original drive to reset the drive configuration.
    • If the CD or DVD drive is listed as normal but your disc burning software does not recognize the drive, Device Manager shows no special icons c00877302.gif . Windows is detecting the drive but the writing software does not. Leave Device Manager open and continue with the next section Disc burning software does not recognize the original drive .

Desktop icons do not load when pc is restarted - something in the regestry was accidentially deleted. How can this be fixed? System restore didn't work. Thanks!

mate I had the exact same problem as you on one of my mates pc's but i managed to get it fixed.

It was due to a virus which was hidden really well away in the system folder. I suded AVG Anti Virusmag-glass_10x10.gif, Spybot Search and Destroy and also Ad Aware.. which found the file.. and quarantined it.. then I just deleted the file thru explorer.. and ran these three again .... then restarted and hey presto all was ok !

My mate already had AV Software on his machine - he just hadnt updated it hence why this one got in, which effects the log in process.

hope this helps

If you can get to AOL No Problem than I can help.

Once your on AOL
add this to your address bar (http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html)
Download the file and save it to your desktop
From your desktop double click and run the program
Automated Removal Instructions for Antivirus Pro 2009 using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware:

  1. Print out these instructions as we will need to close every window that is open later in the fix.

  2. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, or MBAM, from the following location and save it to your desktop:

    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Download Link

  3. Once downloaded, close all programs and Windows on your computer, including this one.

  4. Double-click on the icon on your desktop named Download_mbam-setup.exe. This will start the installation of MBAM onto your computer.

  5. When the installation begins, keep following the prompts in order to continue with the installation process. Do not make any changes to default settings and when the program has finished installing, make sure you leave both the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware checked. Then click on the Finish button.

  6. MBAM will now automatically start and you will see a message stating that you should update the program before performing a scan. As MBAM will automatically update itself after the install, you can press the OK button to close that box and you will now be at the main program as shown below.

    mbam.jpg

  7. On the Scanner tab, make sure the the Perform quick scan option is selected and then click on the Scan button to start scanning your computer for Antivirus Pro 2009 related files.

  8. MBAM will now start scanning your computer for malware. This process can take quite a while, so we suggest you go and do something else and periodically check on the status of the scan. When MBAM is scanning it will look like the image below.

    scanning.jpg

  9. When the scan is finished a message box will appear as shown in the image below.

    scan-finished.jpg

You should click on the OK button to close the message box and continue with the AntivirusPro 2009 removal process.

  10. You will now be back at the main Scanner screen. At this point you should click on the Show Results button.

  11. A screen displaying all the malware that the program found will be shown as seen in the image below. Please note that the infections found may be different than what is shown in the image.

    mbam-antiviruspro-2009.jpg

You should now click on the Remove Selected button to remove all the listed malware. MBAM will now delete all of the files and registry keys and add them to the programs quarantine. When removing the files, MBAM may require a reboot in order to remove some of them. If it displays a message stating that it needs to reboot, please allow it to do so. Once your computer has rebooted, and you are logged in, please continue with the rest of the steps.

  12. When MBAM has finished removing the malware, it will open the scan log and display it in Notepad. Review the log as desired, and then close the Notepad window.

  13. You can now exit the MBAM program.
Your computer should now be free of the AntivirusPro 2009 program. If your current anti-virus solution let this infection through, you may want to consider purchasing the PRO version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to protect against these types of threats in the future.
If you are still having problems with your computer after completing these instructions, then please follow the steps outlined in the topic linked below:
