Easiest way is prob to use DVD43.  This will remove region protection on the fly from DVD's without needing to modify your Pioneer's firmware.
Its also free.
Download from http://www.dvd43.com/

How to make HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH60N region free

Hello,

You can usually change the region code in the drive's properties. Go to Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager, Find your device then go to properties and change the region code.

If you run out of permitted region code changes, updating or just re-flashing the same firmware on the drive may clear the counter.
Usually this works best if you can put it on a bootable flash drive so there are no conflicts with the operating system but this is not a must have.

You might check the manufacturer of the DVD-Ram to see if they have a region free flash on their website as well.

Best wishes,
Joe

Tried to fit sata pioneer 216 dvd writer [it only had dvd rom fitted] it wont reconise it do I need to download drivers?. I put an old multi pin dvr in and it works fine. any ideas thanks

Go to your burning program's web site (roxio-nero-sony) and find updated drivers for your burning program. Your computer, burner and driver must all talk to one another.
Now you may also have to go to Pioneer and download any new drivers if there is a change between XP and Vista...
Just because your 216 dvd is new to you..it may have been on the shelf for a time.
Hope this does the trick for you, please leave rating, thank you kindly

Hi! I have changed my DVD region code 4 times already (Powerbook 12" G4) I am in America at the moment and I would like to watch region 1 DVD's for a couple of months. Is there any way of just...

Yes there is a solution (or several in reality).

Do a Google search using the following string:

(Brand name) (Model number) +"region free"

Yes that is "+"region free"", you need the plus symbol (no space) Quote symbol (the words) region free and a last Quote symbol.

This should bring up either Firmware solutions where you download and install a new version of your Firmware, or will offer the Codes to be entered (and how to do this) to make your unit Region Free. The latter will probably be found in forums, so do not skip over these.

Good luck.
