Question about Gateway Computers & Internet

Prior to Windows Vista updates I had my favorites listed when I clicked on Internet Explorer. As of 2 days ago rather than listing favorites my PC goes directly to Google which does not have my favorites. Help !

    I followed the suggestion sent and the Favorites tab appeared in the bar along with File , Edit. View, Tools, and Help. Many thanks for your help. S / PAS

Did you download the Google Chrome browser or install a toolbar by any chance?

You can also try this:
1. Open IE by clicking on its icon on Desktop.
2. Click on Tools > Internet Options
3. Under 'General' tab, click the 'use blank' button under the "home page" entry.
4. Click on "Programs" tab and click on 'make default' button under "Default Web Browser" entry.
5. Click 'Apply' and 'OK' buttons

Close IE and reopen to see if this solves the issue. Please post back if this is not what you meant in your original query..

How do I remove favorites & history from favorites list?

The details below assume that you are using Internet Explorer.
Load Internet Explorer, click on tools and then Internet Options.
In the window that comes up about two-thirds of the way down it says Browsing History. Click the Delete button and the list of options will come. Put a tick in the boxes opposite the options you want to use and click OK. Those options will be applied. There is also an option box for "Delete Browsing History on exit". If you click on this box then every time you leave Internet Explorer your browsing history will be deleted. Just bought a Gateway ne522 series , and internet explorer keeps closing . As soon as I click on it to open it, it immediately closes and wont recover .


Go to the control panel, open your list of programs. Click view installed updates on the left. Allow a few seconds for the list to update, then scroll down until you see Windows Internet Explorer #, (# = 9 or 10 typically). Select it, then click uninstall. When the installation completes you will be required to reboot. After reboot, Internet Explorer will revert back to the previous version. Test and let us know.

Whereas Internet Explorer is a very popular browser, you may have problems with it from time to time. Internet Explorer has been known to either randomly shut down or close pages. This can be extremely irritating, especially if you are in the middle of a project. Use these tips to fix Internet Explorer if it keeps closing Web pages.

Start by deleting your browsing history. Open Internet Explorer and click the "Safety" tab found in the top right corner of the Web browser. Then, choose the "Delete Browsing History" option. A box will appear on the computer screen. Make sure that there are checkmarks next to each option listed in the box. Click the "Delete" tab to delete the browsing history. Move to the next step if Internet Explorer keeps closing pages. How can I reinstal Windows Search and Windows Security Centre


Install Windows Security Center


Open Internet Explorer and navigate to the Microsoft Windows Update website.


Click the "Express" button on the main page to have your computer checked for important updates to be installed.


Since Windows Security Center is not installed, it will be detected and installed within the update.


Search the list of updates that will be installed on your Computer and deselect any options besides Windows Security Center that you don't want installed at this time.


Click "Install Updates" to begin the installation process.


Set your computer up for Automatic Updates to keep your computer up to date.

You can do so by clicking "Start" followed by "Control Panel."


Click "Automatic Updates" and select the recommended option.


Click "Apply" followed by "OK" to save the changes and exit the window.


Install Windows Security Center in Windows Vista


Click the "Start" button followed by "All Programs." Scroll through the list and select "Windows Update" from the available options. You can also type "Windows Update" in the search field followed by pressing "Enter" to access it immediately.


Click the "Change Settings" button in the left window pane.


Select the radio button next to "Automatically download and install updates."


Click "OK" when you have finished. Windows will begin to scan your computer and download the necessary updates, one of which will be Windows Security Center if it isn't available on your computer already. When the updates have finished installing, a bubble will pop up in your system tray telling you new updates have installed and your computer needs to be restarted.


Restart your computer and once you log back on to Windows, Security Center will be available. You can access it by clicking the "Start" button and typing "Windows Security Center" in the search field. It will also be available in the "All Programs" software list.


Reinstall Windows Search


If for some reason you've lost Windows Search from your computer, it is possible to reinstall it.

Reinstalling Windows Search will improve the performance and stability of your computer system's indexer.


It will allow you to sort and group results in Windows Explorer more quickly, and will improve the indexing of your online email.


It expands your system's ability to do fast remote queries of file shares, including on Windows XP and Server 2003.

It automatically indexes shared folders and contains improvements in previews for earlier supported operating systems (Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP).


When you type a search term into Windows Search, the results appear quickly.

This is also true for information from emails and their attachments.



Download and install Windows Search on your computer.

Can't find favorites bar


  1. Firefox
    • 1 Launch your Firefox browser.
    • 2 Right-click on a blank area of your browser's search bar. This should cause a menu to pop up.
    • 3 Review the menu's list. You will see an item in the list called "Bookmark Toolbar." If it has been accidentally disabled, it will not have a check mark beside it.
    • 4 Click the "Bookmark Toolbar" option. This will put a check mark beside it and place it back in your browser's top menu.
    Internet Explorer
    • 1 Launch your Internet Explorer browser.

Can not download yahoo toolbar "Internet Explorer


Internet Explorer's Add-on Management feature lets you view, enable and disable the list of add-ons which can be loaded by Internet Explorer. Add-ons include browser helper objects, ActiveX controls, toolbar extensions and browser extensions.
To view or modify the add-ons on your computer by launching Manage Add-ons:
1. In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, click Manage Add-ons, and then click Enable or Disable Add-ons. 2. To disable an add-on, select it in the list in the Manage Add-ons dialog box and select the Disable radio button. 3. To enable an add-on, select it in the list in the Manage Add-ons dialog box and select the Enable radio button. 4. Click OK to confirm. Note: Disabling an add-on does not remove it from your computer. It simply prevents Internet Explorer from executing the add-on's code-it does not prevent other software from executing the add-on. If an add-on is disabled, website pages that rely on that add-on may not work as expected. For more information on Add-ons, click the "Learn more about add-ons" help link in the Manage Add-ons dialog box.

Cant play sound it keeps asking for multimedia audio controller when i install audio driver it states RPC Server not found


It sounds like you have the wrong driver installed or there are more drivers that you need to install and update.

One way to ensure that you install the correct drivers is to go through the Device Manager and update your driver.

This is for a Windows XP system

To Update your drivers through Device Manager, pls do the following:

1. Attach your computer to the internet, make sure you can get on the internet by launching your browser, ie. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari
2. Navigate to Start/Control Panel, System
3. Choose the Hardware Tab and click Device Manager
4. See if there are yellow exclamation marks or question marks listed
5. Select them and right click on each one (you have to do this one by one until you see no more yellow exclamation marks or question marks)
6. Choose Update Driver
7. Follow the prompts to complete (usually by clicking ok to all the prompts)

This is for a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system
1. Connect your computer to the internet and ensure that you have internet connection by launching your browser and surfing to your favorite website.
2. Navigate Start/Control Panel/System
3. On the top left hand corner, click Device Manager
4. Do the same from 5-7 under the Windows XP directions up above.

Again, remember that sometimes drivers are related to something else on the system. Therefore you may need to update one or more drivers. This is the only way to ensure that you get everything.

Ever since upgrading to Internet Explorer 8, I find that I cannot print emails, open up many attachments, and retrieve other information. For example, if I click on a link, I get the following message:...


Ther are known conflicts with Vista and IE8 - particularly with Vista 64-bit.

I would suggest uninstalling IE8 and reinstalling IE7 or using an alternative browser such as "slimbrowser" (excellent program) or similar.

IE8 can be uninstall by using Add or Remove Programs module in Windows XP, but in Windows Vista, Windows Internet Explorer 8 is not considered to be a ‘program’. Instead, IE8 is categorizing as an ‘update’. Thus, users will not be able to find Windows Internet Explorer 8 in “Programs and Features” of Windows Vista.

To uninstall Internet Explorer 8, go to Control Panel, and click on Uninstall Programs link or Programs and Features icon. Then on Tasks pane on the left, click on View installed updates link. Locate and select Windows Internet Explorer 8 in the list of installed updates, and then click on Uninstall button. Click on Yes when asked that are you sure want to uninstall the update.

If there is no option of IE8 been found on “Programs and Features” or “Add or Remove Programs” dialog box, or uninstallation of Internet Explorer 8 is unclean (causing error message such as setup cannot continue because a more recent version of Internet Explorer has been detected on this computer when trying to downgrade to IE7), try to manually run the spuninst.exe.
To do so, go to C:\WINDOWS\ie8\spuninst\ folder (your drive letter may be different), and run spuninst.exe.

Restart the computer after uninstallation completed.
