Common Kenwood Security Codes
Many Kenwood radios are configured with the same security codes:

KCAR - This seems to be a "backdoor" to some Kenwood models.
3051 - This is the security code which is printed in the manual of many Kenwood models.
1234 - This is a security code commonly chosen by Kenwood owners.
Entering Your Kenwood Security Code
If the car battery fails or is disconnected, the Kenwood will ask for the security code.

The procedure to enter your security code differs on various models of Kenwood car stereos. Here are three of the more common procedures:

Type 1
During the code request mode, while holding the DISP key depressed, press and hold the Volume UP or DOWN key for 3 seconds until the "..." display disappears.
Enter the security code using your Kenwood remote.
Type 2
Press the "Auto" button and "Track up" on the face of radio at the same time until the four dash lines disappear.
Enter the security code using your Kenwood remote.
Type 3: Model# DPX-4020 and DPX-4030
Press and hold the 1 then the 6 preset keys until the display shows the letter 'C'.
Enter the security code using your Kenwood remote.
Entering Letters on your Kenwood Remote
To enter a letter using your Kenwood remote, press a button once for the first letter, twice for the second letter, and three times for the third letter -- then press the Track Up or Next Track key to send the letter.

To send the letter 'A', press the 2 key once and then press the Track Up key. To send the letter 'B', press the 2 key twice and then press the Track up key.

Finally, when you are done entering all of the letters, press and hold the Track Up button for 3 seconds.

The key sequence to enter the security code KCAR is:

5
5
Track Up
2
2
2
Track Up
2
Track Up
7
7
Track Up
Your Kenwood should then enter tuner mode.

A Security Code Bug in some Kenwoods
There is a reported bug in the security code handling of some Kenwood stereos. In models with thie bug, the security code is stored incorrectly. The workaround is to enter the wrong security code.

In models with this bug, you have to decrement the third character of the security code by one. If your security code was 1111, you would enter your security code as 1101. If your security code was 9999, you would enter 9989.

SOURCE: The motorized face plate only sits at the half-way

the flexible cable that goes from the face to the main motherboard is probably bad and needs to be replaced

Radio works but face plate shows nothing

You have two possibilities. You can try cleaning the contacts on the back of the radio and on the subpanel with qtips and rubbing alcohol or a pencil eraser. If that doesn't work, you may have bad solder connections on some surface mount resistors inside of the radio. If you are good at soldering they should be on the right front of the radio, you will have to remove the cd mechanism to get to them.

My jvc cd player goes off and i have to remove the face plate and put the face plate back on for it to work again what could be the problem

Try cleaning the copper connecting pins with some rubbing alcohol. This sounds like it is a issue with the face no fully locking into the deck anymore

Display on kdc-mp638u not working

These units are pretty cut, and dry.. Basicly the only thing you can check for yourself is connection. If the connection between the face plate, and the deck is good, and tight then you have one of 2 problems.
1) Bad face plate. Fix= $90-$130

2) Bad connection to the board on the radio Fix $60-$120

There is however a VERY off chance the processor is jumbled up, and wont cost you a dime to do a cold reset, so give it a shot.

To reset this unit simply remove the face plate, and locate the rest button. It is very small, but easy to find. Just use an ink pen or something of similar size to push the button.

Face plate wont turn on

On the faceplate back, there should be some metal contacts. Take a white (not pink, red, purple, etc) pencil eraser and clean the contacts on the faceplate back. You can take a little rubbing alcohol and a q-tip to the contacts on the player itself...just use a little bit. Let it dry for about 5 minutes and try again. If it has a reset button, you may try pushing it, however that will most likely reset the clock, radio stations, and any eq settings.

Loose Connections

Good Day,

It's probably more likely it's a problem with the unit itself. If it was faulty wiring you would loose power intermittently and or have one or more speaker's cutting in and out.

Try contacting Kenwood to see if your warranty is valid.

Good Luck

Hope this helps
