Maytag MGR5770 Gas Kitchen Range displays OFF and nothing works!

I had to work on some electrical ckts in the kitchen today, so turned the power off and the breaker box. When I turned to power bakk on the Stove's Oven won't work. can't set time or anything. Stove has power to it since the oven light works. Manual doesn't say anything about a display of OFF.

Thanks in advance

The display is blank. When you push any button the word "OFF" is displayed for about 15 seceonds and then goes away. Off is displayed in the same place the 3 digits would be displayed if you were setting temp of the oven.

Test the fuses? Within the range or breaker box? If your talking about the breaker box the circuit is fine.

  • truettdc Nov 07, 2008

It's not that the ocen won't light, the control panel is blank except for the word "OFF"

  • truettdc Nov 08, 2008

    If I think it's bad????

I was hoping that someone would tell me if it is, or is not bad, if it displays the word OFF. Maybe there some kind of reset other than cycling powere on and off. Surely the hard software installed in the display was programed to display this under certain conditions...Yet know one has ever seen the display read OFF

That is normal, whenever you cut power the range goes in Off mode, that is a safety standby mode. The same as you first installed the kitchen.
No faulty thing and no need to take apart anything, do not disassemble the appliance.

The usual procedure to activate back the kitchen range is by downpressing the timer main wheel.

If this does not work, then there must be a different command, check the user instructions , or try playing withthe controls.

Hi,

Initially, pls try to unplug from the mains, this simulates a reset.. Additionally, try to reset the circuit breakers. It is possible that only one engaged. In some models, there is a reset button at the rear of the unit. If none is corrective, it would appear that the system controller/logic needs looking into.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

    Hi again,

I was reviewing past similar cases. It would appear that in some incidents of similar concern, the keypad has been determined to be faulty, might you want to try and check it out. Incidentally, some versions has a tech sheet somewhere inside or behind one of the panels.

Hi The range timer is usually located in the control panel on top of the range. If you suspect the timer is faulty, don't try to fix it yourself. Remove it and take it to a professional service person for testing. Here's how to remove the timer:

Step 1: Remove the back service panel to the control panel and release the spring clips that hold it in position, or remove the retaining screws.

Step 2: Push the timer forward to release it.

Step 3: Remove the electrical lead wires from the timer housing. If, when disassembling the timer, you notice that the electrical wire terminals look burned, remove these leads and buff the leads and the terminal points with fine steel wool. Burned and/or dirty terminals can cause the timer to malfunction, but a good cleaning can solve this problem.

Step 4: Replace the old timer or install a new one of the same size and type, if this is necessary. Connect the new timer the same way the old one was connected.

Most likely cause for the problem described is a weak HSI. Hot Surface (Glowing) Igniter. Replace that part as a first do it yourself attemp to correct the problem.

Retail parts dealers and appliances parts stores can also help determine what the possible problem may be based upon that specific brand and model. Bring the make, model and serial numbers. Dealers and appliances parts stores are listed in the phone book.

Additional Suggestions:
Read the manufacturers on line web site for product information, problem possibilities, causes, solving methods, part locations, disassembly, reassembly methods, repair procedures, pictorials, schematics, repair and or owners manuals which may be available on line.

Cautionary Reminder Note:
Before attempting any repairs, be sure to unplug the appliance from the wall receptacle power source first.

Your Oven has two igniters in it since it is unlikely that BOTH went bad at the same time, I would try having the sensor at the back of the oven or the electrical cord checked.

That would be the 2 most likely causes
If this doesn't help please post back and I will try to offer more advice

Thanks
Dave

With the display being blank I think we can probably narrow it down more to the cord or possibly the clock timer, as the display should not be affected by a faulty sensor

    Hope this helps

Fuses can become weak, burn out or blow out.

Check for fuses and test them for continuity.
