Question about Compaq Evo Notebook N200 Notebook

1 Answer

Doesn't boot from HD

The HD has Widows2000 installed and normally boots up. In the BIOS the first choice is to boot up from the HD, secondly CD-ROM, third removable Device and last network Boot When I have the LAN cable plugged it is looking for a bootable server but does not find any. This seems to mean that it try the other three possibilities firts and ending up not finding bootable file. What about the UBCD I have made. Even if I change the BIOS to firts boot up from CD it give the same error. Can it be a hardware problem on the mother board?

Re: doesn't boot from HD

Maybe the cmos battery is dead and is not saving the new boot sequence settings you are trying to enter. Try to obtain another cmos battery and replace it. If it still does that, then there might be some corrupted startup files that is not allowing the computer to boot

In the list of the Boot Order are Boot Devices.

What is at the TOP is the first boot device the laptop will boot from.

Should be;

4) Network

Having CD-ROM Drive at the top allows you to install a different Operating System, that the laptop did not have from the factory.

ALSO; Windows DOES NOT like to be written over, with a lesser operating system, or the SAME version of operating system.

My little sisters dell inspiron mini just got the Unmountable boot volume message. I've looked online but most of the options require a cd which is of course not helpful when the mini doesn't have...

The best option is, look around for external cd-rom with usb connection, and reformat the laptop. You need to go into the bios and change the boot order to make your usb cd-rom to first in the boot list. Once the usb cd-rom is plugged into used port, with operation system cd in it, on your F2..go into the bios, to the boot order make your usb cd-rom on top boot list,,then save changes to exit the bios. Once again the system reboots..with message PRESS ANY KEY TO BOOT FROM CD ROM.. so just simple steps to follow..its not going to be expensive..good luck

When I power on my Toshiba laptop is tells me to press f2 for SETUP, Press f12 for boot device selection menu. But am not sure what to do after I get on either screen

the one you press are the setup for bios the boot menu, you will select which is your priority to be your first boot,2nd and 3rd..the first boot you choice will be the one boot first..highlight the boot selection then navigate your choice..if you are going to boot it first from cd drive then select cd-rom,and if you to boot your drive which contains your system, then select hard drive as first boot..

My laptop won't boot from cd

to reset the BIOS, there is a small battery somewhere in your computer. if you unplug it for 3 seconds, it will reset the BIOS. I RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT TRY THIS! get a service professional. If this doesn't work you might need to get a new laptop.

Not install windows xp in hp laptop

Enter your BIOS and make sure you set your boot order to CD ROM first, or at least to before your HD and on boot make sure to look for the prompt (only shows for a few seconds to press any key to boot from CD) and you should be good to go.

Let us know if this method fails so we can suggest other options.
Good luck.

XP wont be able to detect your hdd as you are using a SATA drive. You have two options here

1. Disable SATA function in the bios (easier to do) and use again your XP cd to install the software, it should be able to detect the hdd this time around

2. You have to slip stream the SATA driver to your XP CD and recreate another CD from it. (harder to do). Google "SATA driver slipstream XP" you will be directed to the proper sites
