Question about Televison & Video

3 Answers

My 36" Sony XBR 400 (Tube) TV does not switch on anymore. I started having this problem since the last month or so. It does make a sound as if it is being started, but does not eventually. A couple of weeks ago, if I switched on the TV, it would not start, then the next day it would start. But now, it has stopped switching on completely. I can see the power light blink a few times (I think 5 times or so) when I switch it on, then nothing happens.

Your tv has entered auto shutdown mode maybe because you have a short or a mess up on a circuit board. It keeps the tv from catching fire. You will need to get it checked by a professional to tell you the problem and to get it fixed.

Try doing a tv reset by leaving it unplugged overnight and plugging it back up. It might work.

This could happen due to several reasons.if you have a technical idea .first check the power wire of the tv is it proper or looks like short any where or cut any where. unplug the tv from the electric socket for sometime then check by connecting it again.if it does get resolves then its something major can be resolved by a professional technician.if you have an technical knowledge you can start removing the board fron the tv by opening it carefully.and on the board check out for any burnt capacitor or any ICs or any thing gone short on the main board.
replace it by using soldering iron.
thanks.

Failure of the vertical deflection module/circuit. The tv will have to be opened, the vertical deflection circuit found and replaced.
Definitely a job for a pro - the circuit is going to be extremely difficult to extract. The repair will cost you about $200: $20 for a new circuit and $90 per hour for the 2 hour job.

Sony trinitron xbr screen periodically goes black. The audio stays on but the video cuts out.

Sony sets have several protective circuits that blank the screen if something happens that might damage the picture tube. One of the more common causes is trouble in the vertical output circuit. Given the age of your TV (the XBR models have been around a while), this might also be a symptom of a picture tube starting to fail. Most of these sets have circuitry (called AKB) that adjusts the color drive signals to the picture tube to keep them balanced. If one of the colors is enough out of range the screen will blank. It might be the tube itself, or failure of some part in that AKB circuit. The set might also have defective parts in the input switching or video processing stages.

Unfortunately, I can't suggest any place you might look if you want to try repairing this on your own. This kind of trouble usually needs to be diagnosed and repaired by a professional TV technician who has the service information to track it down.

Hope this has been helpful. Thanks for using Fixya!

Sony Triniton xbr

The continuous blink code indicates some failure in communication between the computer in the set and the big signal-processing chip that controls most of the TV's video functions. Since the set fell, it's probably due to a either cracked circuit board or a broken picture tube.

If the board is cracked, it might repairable if the broken circuit traces can be found and patched. If the tube is broken (because the shock of the fall cracks the glass neck of the tube and allows air to leak in), it's time to replace the TV.

There's really nothing you can do on your own to fix this. Your best bet is to see if a professional can come out and give you an estimate. (Or use this as an excuse to get new flat-screen which would take up a lot less room!)

Tube going out? Picture goes on/off/on/off/on/off til I go nuts!

If it does this on all inputs (cable, and dvd player) then yes you have a bad tube. If however you have cable and have a cable box it could be the box causing your problem, same with satellite, if you have satellite it could be the box causing your problem. The cable/satalite thing is just kinda a long shot. You most likely have a bad tube, just trying to give you some hope! let me know!

Sony Trinitron XBR, Stand By Mode?

The 6 or 7 blinks usually indicate a problem in the horizontal circuit. Since the TV recovered once, the problem is most likely to be a bad solder connection in that area. If you can solder, resolder any connections on the board that appear grainy or have rings. That may resolve the problem. If not, update this and we'll look elsewhere for defective parts.

Repeated burn up horizontal transistor

Sorry if that sounded kind of kurt. All that i ment is that the price of repeadly fixing an older tube tv may start to outweigh the price of a new flat panel tv. Also samsung (if you like that brand) is still making high definition slim fit tube tv's. Which is an older technology driven tv with new bells and wistles. Also sony's XBR line is an absolutely fantastic tv. When tube tv's were being mas produced sony came up with the XBR line and have been using it ever since. If you can find an XBR series tube tv for a reasonable price you can bet on the fact that it will be a phoneminal tv without spending the mass amounts of money on a flat panel. But as for the repeated burn up of your transistor i cant be of much help. And if thats all you care about doing is fixing the tv you already have well then i just wasted a few min. of your life. I wish i could be of more help on this.
