Question about Westinghouse WST3501 Microwave Oven

WST3501 Problem My WST3501 Microwave tends to turn itself on at random times. Sometimes when I come back home the microwave would be on and working on its own. After the first incident, I've made it a habit to unplug the microwave whenever I go out. A strange thing happens whenever I plug in the microwave. As soon as I plug it in, the microwave begins to run as if it was heating something. If I open the door, it stops. But as soon as I close the door, the microwave keeps on running again, and it won't respond when I press either the "STOP" or any other buttons on the touchpad. I have to wait a while before the microwave starts functioning normally again---"normal" meaning that it will not spontaneously start running when I close the door. Does anybody know what is wrong my microwave?

Okay.. I am looking for a Turntable hub or a Carousel hub for my microwave... It is a Westinghouse and the model number on it is as follows... WST3507... I have not been able to find that model listed anywhere on line... but long story short... I need this much needed hub due to the fact that it is plastic and have begun to melt away. Is there a posibility that there was a typo in the model number and it should be WST3501??? Either way I really do need this part. Can you help me??? lorie8008@hotmail.com

I would say you have a failing door switch or the mount which holds your door switch is loose or broken. In most designs, it is the upper door switch that will produce these very symptoms when it is intermittent or its mount is broken or loose. There are plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door hooks latch when you close the door. The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly. Usually it's not a loose screw, but instead a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position. Slamming the door, damage during shipping or transportation and sloppy manufacturing techniques or materials are the primary causes of trouble with the door switch mounts. Opening the door while cooking (without first hitting the STOP pad) is the primary cause of door switch failure. I have a text file called "doorsw.txt" which helps in diagnosing and repairing door switch problems, and a file called "safety.txt" which is of vital importance. You can find these files via a Google search. In some cases, the problem is a bad connection or a bad relay on the control board. That's something we see from time to time, and we repair those nationwide, but it's usually a door switch. If you still have a problem, please write back with more detail. Be safe!

Just a postscript: I don't necessarily think you have a dangerous situation, but it could be or become one.

I would bet that right now the only things actually "running" are the fan and the light.

But for a microwve to actually cook when you don't want it to can be dangerous, so it's best to get this checked out. It does pose a potential fire or burn hazard.

I have a Westinghouse microwave WST3501 and need a longer electric cord..any suggestions ?

A person with electrical experience can splice in an added amount of cord, but I would not recommend any more cord than needed, since too long a cord can affect the current and possibly lead to overheating and damage.

And I do NOT recommend permanently running a microwave off an extension cord. That's very dangerous.

Westinghouse WST3501 Microwave

Contact Westinghouse Small Kitchen Appliances at 800-245-0600 or 800-947-3745 or visit here.

Is it possible that some spray cleaner accidentally got into the controls?

Direct spraying of cleaners on the keypad and steam from the cooktop can damage the controls.

I always recommend that users spray the cleaner on a soft cloth (not on the keypad itself) then wipe the control panel off.

Also, I always recommend non-ammonia cleaners since ammonia can crack and damage plastic.
