After playing one out of the 3 cd's (all audio) the display panel shows "mecha error"
I have tried cycling the power - but the same problem persists
When I turn the unit on, the display panel just shows mechanical error .... the audio cd's are still inside
thanks in advance for help/tips

First try to turn it off and then on.
If that doasent work, turn it off for 10 mins and then turn it back on.
If the error continues, let me know.
By the way, to try to get your CD out, search for a hole (2 mms in diameter) It should be near the CD tray, but could be anywhere.
Once you locate the small hole, find a paper clip or smomething as pointy as it, and insert the paper clip in.
Press it had and the CD tray will come out.
Good luck and anything else you need let us know,
You can try to take unit apart ONLY
if you can reassemble & an clean the eye
with denatured alcohol, any other will leave
a white ressadue. If the eye can't read disk
it won't play an should show an error
Mecha error is a Mechanical Error. This means that this is an actual physical malfunction of the unit. Sometimes pressing the reset button can realign some of the mechanics but most often this is a problem that requires to be serviced.
