If you want to use it for food tomorrow, you need to burn it in tonight; 1 hour or longer at 400 degrees, outside but protected, to burn off the factory oils, etc. If you cook in it without doing this, you will ruin the food (and the atmosphere) with bad smells.
This turkey is really bigger than Rival recommends for this roaster, so check the size/fit tonight, also. You need an inch all around for best cooking.
I use 325, not 375 as the Rival manual suggests, 4 hours for an unstuffed 18 pounder.
I cannot recommend cooking a turkey in a crockpot for many reasons. I have always cooked turkeys at 200/225 degrees in the oven overnight. The secret is to seal the roaster with heavy duty foil with maybe a cup of water in the roaster, bake the bird upside down. Turn it over, increase the temperature, and uncover it for an hour before serving. Worked for me for 40 years, and the guests never complained.
Rival doesn't seem to care that their lid handles don't hold up. I'm going for the drawer-pull solution, myself! You would think a big company like that would be interested in how poorly their products hold up, especially since the cooker itself (I also have the SC609) is just fine; it's just a case of using poor quality materials for a lid handle. Or maybe it's planned obsolescence, hard to tell.
No, I have not. I was going to check with Rival to find out if the handle on the 18 qt would fit but I think that means I have to buy the whole lid. When I spoke with them before they would sell the lid but not just the handle. However, they didn't have any 16 qt lids. Seems ridiculous that you can't just buy the handle but I don't know what else to do.
I just called Rival for help. Fortunately, my lid "hinge" is going to be replaced with a complete new slow cooker. Call 800 323 9519 or go online at www.rivalproducts.com Also, I saw that they have a recall site (www,rivalrecall.com) for burners. Good luck.
