2 Wire 1800 HW: Good Choice?

My Actiontec GT701-WG just died and I need to replace it. Ebay has some good deals on the 1800HW. Is it reliable and a good choice for a non-techie to self-install?

I'm on a MacBook, OS 10.4.11, wireless enabled.

Thanks.
Bob

Trying to change from actiontec gt701 to actiontec gt701-wg. after new modem is hooked up, internet light stays red. switched by to old modem and all is fine. anyone know why internet light stayed red?

The reason why your internet light is red for the actiontec gt701-wg is because it is not yet configure. You need to access the gui of this router. enter the username and password for your internet connection. You can contact your ISP provider so they can walk you through for the steps on how to configure your new router.

The old router has green light because it was already configured by your ISP provider.

How can I get my WEP key from the router?

You will need to "dial in" to your router. Type 192.168.1.1 into your browser (or obtain this from youir manual). Log in and locate the security section. Note the word used to generate the wep key. Also note what number key you used. Both the security word and the wep key should be visible for you to make a note of for further connections.

Use a Qwest Actiontec GT701-WG router with a different ISP?

Yes, if the other isp is also providing dsl services, but you will have to configure the device the other isp will not help you with that.

but its really not that difficult.

Red internet light stays on

the following link provides some very streightforward advise;
http://www.qwest.com/internethelp/modems/gt701/pdf/13566_GT701_ServiceStatus_031906msl.pdf

check the following in order
1 check that all of the cables are securely plugged in, if you find any loose plug them back in, you may need to powercycle the router afterwards though if the router is subsquently plugged into another unit down the chain power off both units turn them back on turning on the actiontec last.

2 if your ISP requires logon details to be included in your router, double check by viewing your router settings renter them if you are unsure.

3 lastly, have you paid your ISP bill?

Actiontec GT701-WG won't operate wirelessly

In looking on the internet the unit is a DSL gateway. Trying to use it on cable internet is not a real good way to set up your network because I believe the router is waiting for a DSL sync before the services turn on. I would spend the money and pick up a Linksys or Netgear G router, there around $50.

You can use USB instead of Ethernet port but its not a common practise. Leave it empty then.
