Kenwood KDC-X717 - Facplate opens when powered on, stays open. No display.
I have the Kenwood KDC-X717, and when the vehicle is powered on, the faceplate opens and stays there. There is no display at all. When I pull off the faceplate, the unit closes back up, until I put the faceplate back in, and then it opens up again and stays there. I have verified that all voltages are getting to the unit itself (12v constant, and 12v keyed). I am at a loss for what is going on. What is most likely; Bad ribbon cable, bad faceplate, or is the whole unit just shot?
This unit appears to have been opened - the "do not remove this sticker" has been peeled off. Could have been scraped I guess. Would an authorized repair center fix it even though it's out of warranty?

You have to take the unit in to a kenwood service place. They can clear the code for you, but you will have to show them proof of purchase for them to do that. There is no other way. That's the security!
To the right of the number 6 station preset is an auto/name button. In the display it likely shows something like auto 1 or 2. each press will cycle it through Auto 1 > Auto 2 > Manual. You want the manual setting. See if that works for you.
the kenwoods with the motorized face platesdevelop one problem with time. the flexable ribbon cable between the main unit & the face plate. as the face open & closes, over time wares out the cable. problem consists of face plate not opening/closing, display missing & and/or some or all buttons not working. note these can also be intermittent problems. typically the part number is located on the cable itself on the side where it pluggs into the main board. since you have a service manual, you should verify it in the manual.
