I have tried all the options that Tom Tom offer, reset doesn't work, restore the backup - doesn't work so now I'm left with no choice but to reformat. I only got it yesterday and this is the first update I have done. I am not impressed! I hope the reformat works.

Installed tom tom home o my mac, installed some updates and hey presto it stopped working!!!

  • g4cube Jan 18, 2009

I did exactly the same as you guys. My only fix was to take it back to the shop there they swapped it and told me it was a known issue on this model and the mac. The sales guy told me don't update it on the mac until this is sorted or use the windows version that works fine. However the problem was not a issue on the GO 720.

Hi! After downloading the latest map to my brand new go730 (map guarantee 30 days) the device stopped working. Can't boot anymore, just see the white X. Took it back to the shop and they sent it to TomTom. Got the 730 back today. After downloading the latest map I have the same problem again!!! This product is completely rubbish! TomTom provides software which does not work and there is no information on their website!

same problem - 730 worked ok out of the box - installed tomtom software and let it update - no longer worked. Took it back to retailer and got it swapped for a new one - will not let it update until solution provided. Have emailed tomtom - no response to date.

I installed Home today and updated my 730 and it no longer starts up. I don't think the problem has been fixed. I use a Mac too.

I have found a solution to this problem by quick-formatting the device and reinstalling the TT Home this time declining the update to a higher version (just in case).

For the faint-hearted, like myself, in the absence of a working backup I recommend copying BEFOREHAND all files from TT Go to an empty folder in your computer (using Windows not TT Home). This way if you do not succeed at least you can go back to the position before the format.

No maps found

If there was previously a map(s), and now you're getting the No Maps Found (message), it's likely that your map (data) got corrupted. You can recover by restoring your back-up copy of the map (that you'd previously done via TomTom HOME on your computer).
If you don't have a back-up copy, try using your computer's disk check utility to fix the file system (of the storage media on your GPS device). Just connect the GPS to your computer, no need to use TomTom HOME, just use the Properties tab and use the Tools to run a disk check (assuming you're using Windows).
If that doesn't work, you may want to purchase & download and install the latest copy of the map from the TomTom website (via HOME).

Hi i have justnd just purchases tom tom 730 Go and connected it to my pc. it wont seem to disconnect. it wont turn on fully and has a big cross on the screen

That means you didn't let TomTom Home finish your update before you disconnected. You can do one of two things: reconnect update your device, but if that fails to work, you're going to need to do a hard reset of the device. It is very important to allow TomTom Home to completely finish installing any updates you select before disconnecting or the software may become corrupt.

730T - tomtom home hangs when checking for updates - mac

Hi - have had the same problem - if you look on the tomtom website and support they have a list and one is flashing red cross. You need to follow the steps to format the tomtom. I did this and it worked and it included the update. i havent reconnected since i have it working now. I think its a software problem with HOME. Make sure you do a back up on home and make sure you follow step by step. close HOME before you start to reformat and also in the preferences turn off the automatically connect to home when you plug into your computer or it keeps flashing up on the screen to correct. the only solution is to format it. i bought mine two days ago and the first one stuffed up so took it back for a replacement. this one worked when i turned it on but turned out the flashing cross appeared when connected to computer (i have a mac). good luck

Upload latest western europe map v7.20 to TOMTOM 700 not possible

I have managed to solve the problem of loading a new map on my Go700 using a Mac. I discovered that Tomtom is incompatible with the Leopad operaying system, despite the protestations of the idiots at Tomtom ,so I reverted to an older Mac using Tiger.
Taking the instructions given to crinold, I tried to erase the disc on the 700 using home 1.5 - and it didn't work. So I went to disc utilities, highlighted and erased the Tomtom disc, and opened home 2,5. After being refused entry several times, like being told to load an already loaded device, I persevered, and managed, slowly, to add the map I had bought for 78 euros. T]One point oif interes is that when I bought the map, they site stated it would cost 63 pounds sterling, but switched it to euros when the invoice arrived. at a rate very favourable to Tomtom - funny, that.
This is sharp practice, probably illegal in many countries,, but, to be honest, dealing with the mysterious Tomtom company is so frustrating, that I don't have the time or inclination to fight them for the money they cheated from me.
How they survive with such an awful product and extremely bad after sales service is hard to understand - perhaps they won't ... we live in hope.
