Printer will not print black, but will not let me replace black cartridge
Although the printer window on my PC indicates that there still is a little black ink left in the cartridge, noting black prints (however, color does). However, the printer will not let me insert a new black ink cartridge. Every time I hold down the replace ink button, the black and color cartridges move to the left of the printer, but do not stay there long enough for me to replace the cartridge.
Any solutions? Thanks.

Hi, According to your problem first make sure the cartridge you have replaced are original and not refilled old cartridge. Always using original cartridge is recommended. If the all of the above conditions are OK then first align the cartridges and also clean the cartridge head. You can also replace the same cartridge after a little shaking of cartridge. Take out the cartridge from the printer by the recommended process, shake the cartridge and make sure the ink is OK and not dry, then replace it again. open the printing preferences window form printer properties in your PC and align the cartridges, then reboot the printer after deleting all print job in print queue.
Black printer ink in HP Printer may fail to be recognized by the printer. Most times an error message will be sent indicating that something is wrong with the black print cartridge. Sometimes the printer may accept to print with the black ink, but the printouts may have horizontal lines and very illegible letters. In such a case a manual cleaning of the print head should be carried out. In doing the manual cleaning, one should spray Windex heavily on paper towel and wipe off the surface of the print head. http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-40171-printer-not-printing-black

In this case, actually it is not the Black toner that got depleted.
Here the message being displayed indicate that one of the color Toner supply
need to be replaced as it got depleted and currently the printer is printing in
Black and white using the Black toner cartridge.
in this case, to troubleshoot these issues please try
performing the following and check for the results.
* 1. Check for the level of the toner cartridges:
a) Check from the HP Toolbox application. Here are the steps
to be performed from your PC:
* Access the Toolbox software.
* Select the Status tab.
* Select the Device status option.
Here you can check for the supplies status in terms of the %
remaining for each toner cartridges.
b) By checking the supplies status from the printer control
On the printer display when printer is in Ready mode the
supplies status can be checked from the supplies level indicator. Each toner
cartridge and the Imaging drum level will be indicated by a bar which varies
according to the level of the supplies present.
c) Print the supplies status page from the printer.
* On the printer control panel menu, press Menu .
* Use the (Right Arrow) button
to select Reports, and then press Enter .
* Use the (Right Arrow) button
to select Supplies Status, and then press Enter .
If any of the color toner cartridges and the Imaging drum
have a low supply level replace them with genuine HP print cartridges.
The part numbers of the consumables are as follows:
I spoke to Kodak - manufacturers of the printer. They indicated that because their cartridges are cheaper than the competitors, they recommend the printer head may need replaceing, and they recommend it be replaced each time the cartridges are replaced.
They are sending me a relacement printer head, which should solve the problem
It is possible you're black cartridge is too low on ink & needs replaced. If you're black ink cartridge is new, there could be small ammounts of sticky tape left over the contacts of the ink cartridge. Please clean the ink cartridge's copper contacts (side only, not the bottom of the ink cartridge), with a cotton swab & a little alcohol. Since the ink cartridge is removed clean copper contacts inside the carriage holder as well. Allow time for the alcohol to dry. All most every printer installs software that monitors ink level's. To check you're printer for this. Click the start button, slide up to & click Printers and faxs. The printer and fax window will open. You're default printer will have a little check mark next to it. Right click once on that printer name, another little pop-up window will open, slide to & left click on properties.
You're printer (It's name) will open. Near the bottom click on Printing Preferences. Another window will open. Click the Services tab. Than click Service this device. You should be able to see the ink levels.
Have more questions? Please feel free to ask.
Hope this has helped.
Your color cartridge is probably empty as well. you can go to>control panel>printers and faxes> your printer >right click on preferences then click on services. Do all of the maintenance possible on your cartridges and see if that helps. Are your cartridges HP cartridges or generic refills?
I had the same problem and I accidentally found out that if you press the cancel/resume button + the color scan, the printer starts printing a test page I had never seen before (includes error codes and stuff?!?!) and color as well as black comes out perfect but it will go back again into color cartridge problems after printing. Could it be something with the printer software itself? Hell, I am kind of getting sick with HP products. They are overrated and cannot be serviced. Kinda disposable printer although it was being sold as medium range all in one printer.
