Thanks drlalitv for this info. I have been able to get into my router using one of the IP addresses you listed.

Under "wireless" It says I have "no security" . I don't have any experience to get the security set up correctly. Is that something you can help me with?

I have a network name and I changed security to :WPS-PSK and put a pass word in Pre Shared Key field and applied. Hopefully that was correct.

I have a laptop computer as well as my desktop and I am trying to get that to work now with a wireless card I insert. My laptop keeps shutting down and running a check of the disk. Was there something I should have done on the router screen so that my laptop would also work? I do not have it hard wired.

    Thanks, Kathy

Hello again. the wireless card is in my sony vaio laptop. the card is a d-Link wireless card and the software is installed. When i couldn't get my laptop to quit shutting down and running checks of the disk on me after I added the WPA-PSK security, i went in and removed the security. The laptop, card and computer are all working just fine again. However, I still don't have any security. (You probably agree that someone like me probably has no business owning a computer much less wanting to use the internet!) I certainly do appreciate all your help. If you can walk me through this I will be forever greatful.

    Thanks, Kathy

hi Kathy!sorry was away at work..its quite strange that adding security prevented your laptop from shutting down and removing security helped it..i shall look into the matter..if the wifi card is not part of the original configuration of the laptop then sometimes added hardware prevent the computer from shutting down..are there any other errors on the laptop otherwise that u get?see if changing the type of security helps WPA to WEP etc..because shutting down problems could be indicative of other things too..also do a complete update of it on the microsoft website..let me know what happens..

PS:i dont agree with your comments in the brackets, you may not believe but there was a time that i did not know how to restart a system!and here i am giving advice on FixYa!!setting up a wireless is quite difficult and i am very appreciative of your efforts in trying to troubleshoot your own problems..shall help you as much as i can...regards!

Idon't know what my security code is for my belkin router.

To reset your WiFi password, run the disc that came with the router, or look at the back of the router for instructions on accessing your router thru ethernet cable to reset your password. I suggest trying to run the disc first, because if you change something in the router setup that you shouldn't then you could end up with more problems. If you don't have the disc, then often router manufacturers will put info on the back of the router so that you can gain access. Look for an IP Address (Example: // If you find this, then go to a computer that is connected to the router thru the ethernet cable and open up your Internet Explorer, go to the address bar and type in the IP address as it appears on the back of the router. After this it may ask you for a Username and Password. If so, then it also will likely be on the back of the router. Once you gain access to the router's program be careful not to change anything other than the security password. Look for an area labeled Wireless Settings or something similar to that. Once you have reset or changed your wifi password, click Save or Apply if you see that on your screen, then logout of the router's program and close out your Internet Explorer.

Dell dimension 3000 won't see wireless network

Hi, I've jst been looking on the web at the Mimo routers, you may find this article interesting, it may help even though its a couple of years old?

Pay attention to part about 802.11n compatibility?
Perhaps try changing the IEEE standard on the router to 802.11g in the set up pages, as it may be set at 802.11n, which your older wireless card will not see.

As to the acquiring ip address message, try using a static ip address, here's a good guide:-

Maybe this will help?

you can find the user manual from here

I need to find out how to secure my router

The best way in my opinion is to put your router behind a linux firewall, such as smoothwall. Any old computer with two network interface cards will work.
A guide to install smoothwall can be found here:

To secure a network, you need to log into the router. Insert the router IP address in address bar and then type in router username/password to access the Settings page of router. You'd be concerned with the Security or Wireless Security page.
