GE Top Load Washer WLSR2000G3WW~smells like burning and wont drain

My washing machine runs and it smells like plastic is burning. It was spinning fine until today, the cycle finished and the clothes were still soaking wet. Is this something I can fix on my own?

The clothes are wet after spinning When the clothes are wet at the end of a cycle, check these:

Motor coupler
Spin cycle
Siphoning
Water-inlet valve
Motor coupler To test the motor coupler, re-start the washer in its spin cycle. Let the machine run for a minute, and then open the lid and notice whether the tub is spinning:

  • If it's spinning when you lift the lid, the coupler is fine.

  • If it isn't spinning--and your machine was produced by Whirlpool®--you may have a broken coupler. Many Whirlpool-made washers use a small, relatively inexpensive device called a motor coupling. This plastic-and-rubber component is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. When that happens, you need to replace it completely.

Spin cycle If the washer doesn't reach its proper spin speed, the clothes may be too wet at the end of a cycle. Check to be sure the load is properly balanced and run a spin cycle again. If the clothes are still wet, you may have a worn or loose belt (Maytag®), a worn clutch (GE®/Hotpoint®), or a worn motor pulley or tub bearing. Replace the applicable component.

Alternatively, there could be clothes caught between the inner and outer tubs. Read the "It spins but won't pump" section of the "It won't drain" section. Also, there could be other things that cause friction on the drive train. Seek the assistance of a qualified appliance repair technician.

Siphoning If the water that pumps from the machine goes right back into the machine after the spin cycle, it may be because your washer is siphoning the water from a laundry tub with a slow drain, back into the washer. Try to improve the draining of the laundry tub. (Is there something stuck in the drain?) Also, be sure the drain hose doesn't reach more than about 4 inches into the laundry tub. If it does, cut off the excess.

Water-inlet valve Water-inlet valves eventually fail. One problem that may develop with a water-inlet valve is that it can no longer completely shut off when the electricity is turned off to it. Then, the valve may leak and drip water into the clothes tub--you may notice that your washer has water in it when you haven't used it for a few days. To fix this, replace the valve.

The cycle doesn't advance When the cycle doesn't advance, it's probably the timer or a cold-water supply problem:

  • It's the timer, if your washing machine fills with water and begins agitating, but the timer never advances--or if the washer is in a spin cycle and the timer won't advance. Then you need to replace the timer.

  • It may be a cold-water supply problem, if the washing machine fills with water, agitates, drains, and spins, but then doesn't fill with rinse water. See There's no cold water.

The new style GE washer has had trouble with bleach, water leaking onto the motor harness plug and burning the wires. If the motor is not damaged, this is how to repair the motor wire harness with kit part# WH49X10007. Sometimes a loose wire connector can also burn the motor wires, this kit will correct that problem as well.
    Remove power!
    Access the front panel clips.
    Remove front panel
Cut all the wires in the wiring harness to the motor, at the bottom of the steel suspension rod. Strip 7/16" insulation from all seven wires coming from the top of the cabinet. Excess wire will be looped at the cabinet later on in the installation. Unplug remaining harness at motor and discard.
    Install new harness kit
Find plastic push-in harness retainer on new harness section and insert it fully into existing hole in the right front platform leg. ( see picture below )
Plug in motor connector until it is seated, make sure that the harness forms a loop below the motor connector to prevent water from running down wires and into motor plug.
Attach ground wire to hole in platform corner ( see picture above )
Route wires behind front platform leg. Dress wires upward spiraling between tub and suspension rod, towards capacitor mounted on cabinet flange. ( not all models have a capacitor )
Match color for color wires in harness and twist them together. Install closed end splice connectors and firmly crimp all seven.
Using small wire tie, secure all 14 wires together just below connectors.
Position the wire bundle directly behind the capacitor area with the wire connectors protruding 2 -1/2" above the capacitor area. Secure with large wire tie to either the capacitor or a hole in that part of the front cabinet.
In addition to wire tie, use black electrical tape to secure wire bundle to the top of capacitor, if provided, to ensure that bundle is secure.
Install plastic twist clip to secure new harness to suspension rod. Bend both right and left corners of the galvanized drip plate downward about 1/2" to ensure proper water drainage away from motor and motor plug ( if not factory formed - see picture below )

Reinstall front panel, plug in washer and check for proper operations.

I accidently washed a large load of laundry without switching from previous small load selection; now washer has burning smell and wont work??

probably broke the motor coupling, it's made of rubber and plastic, when machine is out of balance it breaks, if you turn it on agitate or spin and you can hear the motor running but nothing spinning then it has broken, part cost about 20 bucks Try Repairclinic.com

if you have a rubber smell that means that the belt is burning through. Several problems can be the case.
1 bearing of the drum ( check if it turns freely if so the bearing is ok)\
2 the belt is worn and need to be replaced.
3 carbon brushes in motor are worn
4 bearing in motor is gone

open the backside of the machine and check belt.
think that is your problem

We have the same problem, and found out the the electric motor is running very hot. Replacing the motor seam to cure the problem, but the motor is not inexpensive. $200 to $350.
