Question about Panasonic PT-53WX42 53" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Bent image I have a Panasonic PT-53WX42 projection tv. I was watching it the other day and the picture started showing this blue bent image across the bottom of the screen. I just cleaned the mirror and guns about a week ago. I even vaccumed the dust out of it. When I was done I set the convergance on it and it had a perfect crystal clear picture. After it started doing this I checked the convergance again and it is so far off it wont come back in alignment. So I took it back apart and looked down inside the guns with it on and the blue gun has an off center bent image comming from it. The others look just fine. They are flat, bright and crystal clear. I think I have described this as best as I can. If you need more info just ask. Please sombody help I'm going crazy without it.

Well im not to familiar with tv service but I am very electrically and mechanically inclined maybe with some help from u guys you can coach me through it. Im sure i can fix it myself. First off what is an IC, second where is the blue convergance amplifier located, third what adjustments have to be made and how do i do them, fourth, how much is the part and where can I get it. What precautions do I need to take.

I only have two on my set. Why would it not have 3. I am positive that ther are only 2. Think checking the solder joints would be a good idea?

  • Phil Sulla Oct 14, 2006

Got the manual today and it looks as if IC7002 controls the blue, according to the schematic. Each of those IC's have 2 transitors. IC7002 controls half of green and all of blue and IC7001 controls the other half of green and all of red. Does this make sense? It seems as if I would have a problem with green and blue. I dont know maybe not. But While I was reading this thing I thought I would tell you that the image coming from the blue looks like a crooked pin cushion. Thats a better way of discribing it. Do you still think it is the blue convergence amp IC or could it be something else. If you think that will fix it I will order it and put it in.I checked all the solder joints on the IC's and the entire board and also the blue driver board. No problems found,no signs of getting hot.

Sorry each IC has 3 transistors.

Excelent description, whats happening is your set starts to show a blue convergence problem and is only correctable by replacing the blue convergence amplifier IC,the set has 3,one for each color, not all of them develope problems but they all develope loose conections, after the IC has been replaced there are adjustments to do.If you are familiar with tv service this information will give a place to start but if you are not too familar be safe and call a servicer to help you.Lets US know how it goes.

An Ic is an integrated circuit,is a lot of transistors in one package, you need the service manual to locate the IC,normally identify by a name they give him in the board like IC801 or IC810 something like that,it could be anything, you have 3 of them and they are mounted in heat sinks, they are about 2.5 "x1.5" color black and it has the marking STK--- ---(example STK391 110),I dont really know whitch ones your set uses.Sometimes it does not need adjustments, only the custumer adjustments do it but sometimes you need to get into the service software and thats were it can be difficult,THe Ic's are not expensive(15.00 to 20.00)You can buy it online at www.partsstore.com but you need the STK number, working on electronics is dangerours, this sets have high voltages and they can hurt you,you will need to know how to unsolder and solder components. Is different than electrical work. You still have time before the problem becomes really bad , you can use it like this for a while.Let us know if you need more information.

If you only have two is ok,you might want to order the service manual from www.servicemanuals.net you will only need the model number to find it,is a good tool to have even if someone else comes to check the set but will also neede to know witch IC is for the blue.Checking for loose conections is always a good idea, just be carefull and make sure the set is not plug in,beware of some conectors that might become loose when you flip the board.

The convergence problems get worse and not better as it is right now is not showing all the distintive signs of a bad convergence problem I would suggest you wait a little and keep an eye on how it develops,is not going to suddenly stop working and not going to do more damage.I do believe is the begining but it gets really bad,the blue gets out of line and it can not be re aligned. You alredy havea symptom, lets wait a little.Keeps us posted, you can write another question and use my name in the heading so I pick up on it. PLease take the time to get familiar with the convergence circuitry.

I imagine you are looking at the manual and the picture shows you that the IC has 3 transistors inside but physically is only one IC,being use for two colors.

Convergence problem panasonic televison

Unless you are familiar with TV systems, this is best left to a professional. Rear projection systems typically use three separate image sources (red, green and blue) to display the picture. If any of these sources is misaligned, the convergence problem arises. It may be something as simple as a bump while transporting it or some loose screws but given the voltages in the back of TV systems, it is much safer to get a TV engineer to make the proper adjustments for you.

Need to replace the convergence amps and any 2.2 ohm resistors in the return. That unit takes two STK392-110 Sanyo amps - but for greater reliability use STK392-150's and get them, from some place like ACME to be insured their not chineese knock-offs..
