Go into your device manager by clicking Start/Control Panel and from there it depends on your operating system as to where the device manager is. In Windows XP they are under System\Hardware. Once you are in the device manager look for Universal Serial Bus Controllers and if you have a + next to it, click it to expand it. See if any item has a ? on it. If so right click on it and select Update Driver.
If all are ok, then maybe you need to try a different USB Port. If all ports act that way you might be experiencing a motherboard issue with the usb controller.
Are you ever getting a message such as "Your device could work faster if you plug it into a 2.0 usb port"? If so, that might be contributing to the problem. Fortunately for you on a desktop you can put in a fast 2.0 usb port card into one of the pci slots on the back of the computer. So, all is not lost.

With reference to the Acer Z5610. I have a USB issue. THe USBs will work for a couple of days, and then suddenly I plug, for example a USB Hard Drive it, and it says that the device could not be recognised. USB Mouse and keyboard are unaffected. Issues so far with USB Printers/Hard Drives/Flash Drives/iPad recognition.
