The Selectric typewriter has several "interlocks" that can cause the keyboard to be locked. When you turn the machine off there is a mechanism that locks the keyboard. When you turn it on the part should move and unlock the keyboard. Sometimes this part sticks and the keyboard will remain locked. When you type any character the keyboard is locked to prevent two keys trying to type at the same time. The machine locks and unlocks very fast. One keys is locked in and prevents others from working. try turning on the machine and hitting every key just a little bit harder and see if it then types. When you shift, as the ball is turning the keyboard is locked temporarily so it won't attempt to type as the ball is turning as that would damage the machine. Sometimes the shift mechanism can cause the keyboard to remain licked as the shift may not have finished it's complete cycle. Also, the return mechanism locks the keyboard temporarily when the carrier is returning to prevent you from typing when the carrier is moving backwards. Only a qualified technician can resolve those issues.
Take the batteries out and put them back in - in a different order and push the re-connect button (usually red) hold it and wait for it to pick up the signal make sure no of your wires came loose - sometimes wires can get cause on drawers or chairs knobs and other things around the desk when we don't noticed and get dislodged so make sure the connection is all the way connected
Its definitely an issue with some programs which loads only after windows is completely loaded. It maybe the drivers acting up or some other malicious programs which is trying to hinder with the functioning of your keyboard. Try uninstalling the keyboard drivers and restart the computer. Let me know how that goes.
Windows has support for many input-languages, e.g., for keyboards made in France with accented characters,
and for the DVORAK keyboard layout (which is a complete
rearrangement of the letters on the keyboard for maximum
typing-speed).
Go into "Control Panel", and "Regional and Language" and click the "Language" tab, and switch to the "USA Keyboard".
try To download the latest drivers for the keyboard that you are using, visit the following Microsoft hardware Web site: http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download/download.aspx?category=MK
If the issue occurs again, connect the keyboard to a different computer. If the keyboard functions correctly on a different computer, the port to which the keyboard was connected on the original computer may be damaged. If this is the case, contact your computer manufacturer to inquire about how to repair or replace the damaged port. If the keyboard does not function correctly on another computer, the keyboard may be defective. If this is the case, and the warranty on the keyboard is still valid, you can exchange the defective keyboard for a new keyboard.
the F lock button is normally on the top left of the keyboard next to the special buttons row
I believe its the same colour as the body of the keyboard and not sticking out
