Pc running very slow and may need to go back to factory settings but has been passworded by person I bought it from

Follow these steps to fix computer freezes problem::
  • Remove unused programs
  • Install and run antispyware software
  • Free up wasted space with Disk Cleanup tool
  • Defragment your hard disk drive
ALSO
Stop Unwanted startup programs:
Start > Run > write msconfig > Click on StartUp tabDeselect the programs you want to stop

Click Start - Run, type in %temp% and then click OK.
Once that temp folder is open and you can view its contents, select and delete EVERYTHING that's inside it.It's all junk and is a good place for "nasties" to hide.
Repeat the steps with c:\windows\tempAfter you're done with both temp folders, restart the computer.

For an Instant fix use a system utility tool like PCFresher.

Hi,

Improve the Fixya.com experience for everyone by voting!

Unfortunately, I would either have to be in the chat mode or on the telephone with you to fully analyze your problem and provide a coherent answer. But don't despair because there is a little FREE program that may solve your problem.

It happens periodically that our computer shuts down, restarts, hibernates or some other weird thing when we really don't want it to. I'm going to pass on to you a FREE and hard to believe program from Microsoft! I have no idea why this little program hasn't been advertised but then I don't own their stock.

Just click on the following link and your problem should be solved: Download Microsoft's Fixit

I don't know your skill level so my suggestion is that you utilize the automatic function of Fixit.

Be a hero and fix your friends' computers; just don't tell them how you did it! That will be our little secret.

All the best,

I did something to my pc now all my programs have the extension .ink and i cant run anything or open anything what can i do?

The .ink files are shortcuts. If they have no icon, or the same icon then you deleted the programs. Try reinstalling them. If not, don't worry, just launch you application by double clicking the .ink files. If it doesn't work no worries, that's not a biggie and can be easily fixed in a couple of minutes. There are a couple of ways to do it, read both:
Option 1:

- Go to Start -> "Control Panel" -> Click on Porgrams
- Click on "Default Programs"
- Click on "Associate a file type or protocol with a program." to open the "Set Associations" menu.
- Scroll through the list of extensions to locate the .lnk file extension. The listing will show the description and the current default program associated with it.
- Click on the extension (to select it) and then click on "Change Program."
- Select the program you would like to open *.lnk file types.
- Click on OK.

Option 2 (If Option1 fails):

Simply download following file, unzip it, and run it. It will make necessary changes to the registry. Restart the computer and it should be fine.

Cant acess safe mode in windows xp, just cycles startup screens

Here are some steps to use MSCONFIG to force your computer into SAFE MODE
  1. Click on Start and then Run.
  2. In the text box in the Run window, type msconfig and click OK. This will open the System Configuration Utility program.
Note: Do not make changes in the System Configuration Utility other than those outlined here to avoid causing serious system issues. This utility controls a number of startup activities other than those involved with Safe Mode.
  3. Click on the BOOT.INI tab located at the top of the System Configuration Utility window.
  4. Check the checkbox next to /SAFEBOOT and click OK.
  5. You will then be prompted to either Restart, which will restart the PC immediately, or Exit Without Restart, which will close the window and allow you to restart the PC manually.
  6. After the restart, the PC will automatically boot into Windows XP Safe Mode.
Note: Windows XP will continue to boot into Safe Mode until the System Configuration Utility is configured to again boot normally.
  7. When your work in Safe Mode is complete, click on Start and then Run. Type msconfig in the text box and click OK.
This will again open the System Configuration Utility program.
  8. Choose the Normal Startup radio button and click OK.
  9. You will then be prompted to either Restart, which will restart the PC immediately, or Exit Without Restart, which will close the window and allow you to restart the PC manually.
  10. After the restart, the PC will boot into Windows XP normally and will continue to do so.

Explorer.exe keeps restarting

You seem to have a classic case of "malicious software" loading under the guise
of a common [executable] program. Get yourself a 1Gb USB stick and access
the web from a more stable computer.

Download this utility and unzip the files to the USB stick.

Boot your computer into safe mode and right-click the taskbar and click

Task Manager. When the new window opens click explorer.exe then click

End Process......then YES. Next click Applications and then New Task.

34e2409.jpg

When the little box appears click Browse. In new window click My Computer

and double-click the drive letter of the USB stick and run a-squared in

Deep Scan mode. When the scan is complete restart your computer.
