Celestron nexstar 8 i series alignment trouble

Last week I was finally able to get my GPS to align and locate objects off the menu.I set it up last night and was stunned to find that regardless of what alignment mode I selected ,it would begin to slew altitude non stop .I started it with barrel completely down in several directions. It would slew altide non stop bottoming out the barrel and still keep running! I tuned it off and regardless of what I did or alignment mode selected ,it would slew altitude non stop. I diosconnected my CN16 gps unit and it still would not cease slewing until I tuned it off.I have a computerized hand control # 93962 for my Nexstar 8i. Can you solve this problem?

Kind of late with my answer...BUT if you pop off your GPS unit and then just tilt it up and down CAN YOU HEAR a ball bearing moving inside...???

YOU SHOULD....that is how the GPS actually finds the level position of the OTA....sounds like it is stuck..OR even worst that you have a CN-16 unit that was designed for a GEM mount which is not designed at all for leveling the OTA...

Next thing.. exactly what version is your hand controller...version 2.3 ????

Have you followed the instructions in the manual? The first thing to do is setup with the time, date and location, then select a 3 or 2 star alignment method to calibrate. Use ONLY the hand controller to move the scope to the stars.

I have the Nexstar 8. It will not auto align or manual....

First do a RESET on the hand controller and make sure TIME, DATE, and SITE, are correct.

If this does not work then RE-load the firmware in the hand controller. If that fails contact Celestron customer service.

Set up

The finder scope may not be aligned properly with the mn telescope. In the daytime, try setting the main scope on a distant object such as a steeple or chimney in the distance then align the finder scope to point to the same object. Then at night, look at the some bright star or planet and fine-tune the finder scope's adjustment screws so the images are aligned between the two scopes.

Hi there,

I have also recently bought a Nexstar but mine is a 4SE. Im still pretty new at it myself but from what I understand, the Nexgps software is just the computer software to control the GPS unit from your PC - the same as the NexRemote software. If you dont have a GPS unit you have to purchase it as an extra so the software will only be useful if you have GPS.

The Nextour is just software that allows you to add objects you wish to see that the telescope will take you too in tour mode. Once you have it aligned of course.

I see this post was almost a year ago so you probably know all this by now.

Do you have any problems using the star align? Im really battling - gonna try 2 start align because it doesnt quite know where it is when I do the 3 star align.

Regards,
Bianca

GPS not working

Nope! Sounds normal. The GPS is used as the surface point and time refrence, but it still needs the star fixes to orient the axis. 2 star alignment is generally for Alt-Az mounting, while you can use 1 star for rapid setup on a permanent equatorial mount.

Celestron nexstar 11" gps scope

Be sure that the Azimuth Axis is Lock, you migth want to try and move the telescope in the Azimuth to make sure it is it is locked. Be carful not to force it. I have seen on some post where the locking part of the Azimuth somtimes breaks. and the Azimuth Axis will just spin freely Locked down or not.
