Question about Acer PC Desktops

2 Answers

Hey there! I own an Acer Aspire 5710. It’s always had overheating problems and I’m quite used to it shutting down frequently (and frustratingly :( ). However, I was switching it on again a few nights ago after it overheated, and it went into System Repair saying there may be a disk error that it was attempting to repair and that it may take over an hour. That was all cool but then the laptop overheated AGAIN, shutting the System Repair down mid-fix. When I attempted to turn the laptop on once again, it showed the ACER screen and turned on, however after it attempts to load Windows and the Windows System Password screen, the monitor just goes black but the screen is lighted. It doesn’t beep nor go any further. Removing the battery and replacing it does nothing. Restarting the computer with just cable as the power source makes no difference. So I don’t get any further than the shoddy black backlit screen. Any ideas? Your help would be MUCHLY appreciated! xJay

Thanks to both of you for your help!

I will look into purchasing a cooling pad, thanks :)

I'm getting a little further with my laptop atm.. I held down F8 during startup to bring up the Repair/Safe Mode system menus..

It's currently repairing C:, which I suspected was the damaged drive to begin with.

I'll post the results in a few hours or when possible! (Yes, I'm hopeful..)

Thanks again for your help..I shall be back here whether it works or not :)

    Cheers!

    xJay

From what you are saying, the overheating inerrupted the disk error repair. You would need to repair your operating system using your Windows CD. Now to deal with your overheating, I recommend that you purchase a laptop cooling fan from a computer acceceries shop near you. It's normally a simple plastic pad with fans in it on which you place your laptop. I suggest that you obtain this before you go on with the repair since the laptop may heat again and interrrupt your repair.

Sounds like a power supply issue. Acer laptops are known for this exact problem.

after you resolve the overheating problem, which is probably what caused the hard drive issue, (ie bad shutdown) than you will need to format and reinstall windows. Usually this description you are giving is caused by corrupted start up files. (boot loader) There is no work around.

Goes to start up then shuts down

It could be overheating. I had this with a laptop and it was caused by the processor overheating where it needed new heatsink paste, this caused it to start up and then shut down almost immediately. It could also be that it is dusty inside the casing I use an air blower once a month to clean mine out. As a last thought, have you listened to the bleep that a PC makes when it is booting up, mine bleeps once, but all PCs are different. Look in your manual or visit the Acer website this should tell you what yours does and if it is making more bleeps than it should then you should be able to find out if there is another problem such as your hard drive failing. New hardware recently added can also cause this sort of problem as well if it is not compatable or you could have a corrupt driver. Hope this helps.

My acer aspire M5100 getting into shudown mode

Check the temperature of the CPU in Bios. It is probably higher than the Safe temperature and it gets into shut down mode to protect itself.
Open it, detach the cooler from the CPU and clean it, detach the CPU from the socket, clean the paste from the top, put a new one, clean the socket and put everything back. It should work perfectly.
If you need further assistance, just leave a comment. Cheers

Acer Aspire M5100 shuts down randomly. Sometimes lots of programs running, sometimes none. Fans have always been loud, and they still are. I don't know how to troubleshoot, I am a graphic artist and I need...

Would need more detail but sounds like it is a problem with your processor overheating because of ur fan situation. To be sure of this download a program such as speedfan to gauge your temps.

Acer Aspire L100 overheating

You could try a new cpu fan and heatsink. They are normally inexpensive. if this does not work make sure all the case fans are working and check to see if your ram is overheating

Possible overheating problem for Acer Aspire mini L100

I am not totally sure if this is the problem, but I would suggest that you may have a power supply issue or possibly it going out. If the computer runs fine, and then shuts down, than this can be more symptomatic to a overheating issue.

In my limited experience with overheat issues, the computer actually smelled like it was getting hot, and then it would slow down and then sometimes stop. Most computers have fail safe settings where they either alarm, or shut down or both when they overheat.

Read disk error occured during rebooting

The acer recovery software sometimes has it's glitches. The CD might be fine, its just the data that wa written to the disk @ time of recovery creation was corrupt at some point.

If your machine shuts down randomly there can be only 3 possible solutions to this one:
  1. Your battery from your laptop has an issue. Try letting the laptop run on AC power ONLY.
  2. Your CPU is overheating, caused by a broken or unresponsive CPU heat sink fan, which causes your pc to shutdown (will always auto- shutdown at a certain temperature to prevent damage to the CPU. Check if you can feel "air" coming out of your laptop, suppose to be a hatched outlet at the side or at the back or on the top cover.
  3. You have a Virus that is shutting down the pc when it wants to. NO Operating system issue can cause your PC to shutdowb; only a virus can do that.
Summary, check your battery, check if your CPU fan is running, and make a virus scan (if the pc doesnt shut down). Remember to make a backup of your DATA, cause Acer (i dont think they will) don't do backups. Waranty on Acers is usually 3 years, depending on the country. So they should replace and repair, everything.

Computer shuts down for no discernable reason

Im not a expert but my opinion would be to just buy a new power supply. Installation is easy. Thats one thing that gets replaced most often out of all pc parts. I would wait for a expert opinon though, good luck
