To clean the fan you need to use a small battery powered hoover.

If you use a big hoover, that will work , but there is always the risk to damage the motherboard.

Sometimes hoovering is not enough, because dust had penetrated deeply inside the fan bearing, mixing up with grease and causing the noise. In that case you replace the fan.

My acer travelmate 4200 laptop keeps turning of

This could be a sign that your laptop is overheating. If you touch the laptop while it is running & you find it too hot, make sure that the fan is running properly & that the air ways are not blocked.
You can blow compressed air into the cooling vents of the fan. If you notice clouds of dust coming out, then it might be a good idea to disassemble the laptop, clean the fan & air ways, & reassemble it back. If the fan has failed & is no longer running, it might need to be replaced.

If none of this solves the problem, or is not the case, then you might have a bad motherboard.

I've had my acer aspire (5315) laptop for over 2 years

Hello,

Sometimes, the CPU heat sink fan might get clogged up or faulty or stop spinning entirely. Make sure that the fan can turn properly.

IF YOU CAN, open the unit when the battery is disconnected and the power is not connected, then reseat the CPU Heat sink and re-apply a eye drop heat sink thermal paste onto the CPU. Reconnect and tighten everything again properly and adhere to the sequence in turning the screws back as per their numbering on the heat-sink

If the FAN has trouble spinning, doesn't turn at all or is noisy and runs irregular please replace the fan. The fan alone should cost about a few US $.

How can I clean my heat sink cooling fan?

Hello Friend,
  • Do you find that the keyboard and the bottom of the laptop are very hot? Or the cooling fan of the laptop is noisy? Or the laptop suddenly shuts off but no warning and error message? Why?
  • That may be the problem of the cooling fan and heat sink. They may be dirty, and failure to maintain cleanliness on the inside of the box can and will result in overheating, and sluggish performance due to high temperatures.
To clean : 1.Remove the keyboard, access the cooling modules (fans and heat sink), you do not need to disconnect the keyboard, just place it face down on the palm rest.

  1. 2. Spray compressed air inside both cooling fans and sink heat. You can use canned air sold in any local electronics store.

  2. 3. Connect the keyboard.

MEMORY UPGRADE ON ACER TRAVELMATE 5720G

Acer's support isn't the best. IMHO But go to their support site anyway and look up your laptops manual (there should be instructions on upgrading your RAM there). I did find that your machine will accept up to 4GB of RAM 2 X 2GB sticks. There should be a door or port (for easy user RAM upgrading) that is being overlooked, but again it is an Acer.
Good luck.
