My refirgerator makes a loud clanging noise,2-3 clangs, when it shuts down. A repairman suggested the compressor is going. The fridge is only 9 yrs. old. What's your opinion? Time to shop for a new one?

Mine is a year and 4 months old GE refrigerator, and does exactly the same thing you described. The sound seems to come out from the back of the refrigerator. All else work fine. I don't know if I should be concerned. The noise bothers me a lot.

Dear Titu,

I have the same problem with your refrigerator. It was making noise periodcally.
I have just fixed it. This noise either produced by uneven fan or fan motor. This fan was designed for cooling down the thermostats.

I took the fan off and spined it manually. I heard the sound like car belt. You can check right behind the fan. You will see the metal stick from the motor to the fan. Then you can use WD1040 oil to spray onto the surface of the metal stick which is hook up to the motor. This noise is produced by dried condition between the the metal stick and the ring which use to hold the metal stick and the fan. Goodluck

New Kenmore / Whirlpool, 25 Ft. side x side. Has drumming noise when running. Checking showed that condenser coils rattle against compressor support rails plus the flimsey rails allow compressor vibration which resonates through out. Looks like Whirlpool cost-cutting crossed the line over to plain old cheapening the product. Waiting on Sears to come check it. Wish me luck. -JT

I have a Kenmore that is 3 years old and only just started making a loud knocking sound recently. It is very annoying and lasts for 30 seconds or so every hour or two. I took off the back panel and found that if I shake the compressor tank something inside bangs against the wall of the tank. So I leveled the fridge a little better and the frequency of the banging sounds have been reduced significantly.

Titu, can you be more specific on what kind of noise you're hearing. If it's a squealing noise I would suspect either the evaporator or condensor fan. See if you can isolate where it's coming from. Catriver..post back.

My refrigerator is not cooling the freezer works

We have this refrigerator and what you described is a chronic problem. (I hate this refrigerator!) Our repairman got tired of hearing from us so often and told us how to fix it ourselves! Take everything out of the freezer side and unplug it. Remove the white back part inside the freezer part. There are 2 screws at the top. The inside will be full of ice. Melt the ice with warm water. It makes a huge mess so get lots of towels. Once all the ice is melted you can put everything back and plug it in. It may take a day for it to get really cool again. My long term advice is to get a new refrigerator...

Coolong fan making a lot of noise

There are probably at least three fans in your refrigerator. I am assuming it is the fan in the refrigerator, check to be sure it is not being obstructed with ice or some other alien matter. If it is clear then you need to order a new fan ASAP. While you are at it check the condenser and condenser fan, they both probably need cleaning.

Good Luck,

Frigidaire Frig side by side making a loud buzzing noise

it sounds like the compressor, or something near it. it is generally the only moving part in a refrigerator other than the door, so would be my first guess. If it is constantly running, but staying cool in the freezer there may be a small leak somewhere or the compressor is losing power, and pumping slower.

Ice build-up around the fan making a noise.

Drain line froze.
Used hair dryer to thaw frozen line, works OK now. 01/07/09
Think the frozen drain line was caused by the light in the refrigerator not shutting off when the door closes, causing excess cooling in the freezer. Poor design on the light shutoff switch, corrected design to make permanent repair

Refrigerator makes lot of noise

based from your story. the noise could be coming from the compressor as it starts. compressor usually vibrates a lot when starting. it would last from a few seconds to a few minutes then would normalize as it sucked all the evaporator pressure down to its normal readings. you can check the rubber mountings of the compressor, you may need to replace them. also check for some tubings that may be rubbing or touching as the compressor vibrates. tighten alllso those mounting bolst of the compressor. that should solve your problem. if everything is done and still the same, the noise could be coming inside the compressor which there will be no solution but to replace the compressor. the cleaning that you did helped it a little bit because the vibration decreased a little coz it was able to breathe a little.
