Printer switches on for a few seconds then blinks error 6a00.
When lifting scanner up the ink tanks do not move and I cant pull the tanks
away from there park position
Note: It may be necessary to unplug the power cord if pressing the ON/OFF button does not shut off the printer.

Most of these are serious problems that need a Canon service person to fix but sometimes these
errors pop-p when something simple is happening like paper stuck under the printhead or a small piece
of tape on the printhead contacts.

Sounds like a cartridge error

Canon PIXMA MP800 Error 6A00
-Remove a piece of paper that was stuck in the printer
-pushed down on sponges
-moved ink cartridge holder back and forth several times
-unplug printer completely
-removed all the ink cartridges and put them back
The Problem
1. The print head cartridge keeps locking itself up on the right hand side.
2. Frequent 5100 errors even when the printer is on standby
3. Even when I wipe up the print cartridge, the next print will mess up the bottom of the print cartridge with ink again.
here step to fix steps:
1. Opening the cover and wait for ink carriage to center
2. Pull out power cord
3. Pushed carriage to far left (should slide easily)
4. Used paper towel and wiped purge unit a lot of times (press down to soak paper towel with ink). Repeat until the paper towel is relatively clear.
5. Used diluted napisan (oxygen-based cleaning agent in the ratio of 1:3 with powder:water) and soaked paper towel
6. Repeat step 4 with wet paper towel. Repeat until purge unit is near-white.
7. Pulled and pushed clear plastic wiper (north of purge unit) and wiped it down
8. Slided carriage back to original position
9. Removed Print head cartridge and wiped out excess ink stuck on bottom.

All ink jets that receive a PAPER JAM error and nothing is inside, the printer is a dead printer.

There is no point in taking apart blindly a printer just because of a 6A00 (paper jam fault). just check for paper fragments, foreign objects, or any of the paper sensors, that are small plastic tabs, is broken.
I hope you are doing all this just because you are enjoying the disassembly. If you take apart the mechanics, your printer won't probably work anymore.
Trust me.

Its worth a try to give this old trick a go on your problem. It may work. If you don't have a Paper Feed button, you can disregard this one and move on to the next.

Worldvet
Thanks to Darklord1 for this Trick he posted below:
This works with most canon printers and can fix these problem

4.) Other messed up issues
To Perform This

2.) Hold the Power button down(DO NOT RELEASE) and plug the printer back in
The Led Should Be Green
3.) Still holding the power button , press the paper feed button
The Led Should Turn Orange / Red

No need to take it apart :) Just move the cartridge holder back and forth a couple of times to loosen it and clean the rail of any dried ink. Also inspect the right hand corner (home) and see if there is any material that may be loose or blocking the movement. Restart printer and should work.

Check and correct one of this;
1) If its a new printer or even an older one, there are two sponges
that collect ink and two plastic wipers located in purge unit may be
loose or missing. Check to see if its it there. If not, it may actually
be stuck somewhere.
2) there may some paper stuck somewhere around the printhead and or the purge unit or
3) there is a build up of gooey ink on the purge unit.
Thank you for using fixya.

Canon generic code for paper path jam. Some where in the paper path a sensor is activated indicating paper jam so the printer will give off a 6A00 code. As a Canon tech, I usually find the code, almost 90% of the time, is related to the purge unit being jammed with something and not being able to move. Moving the print head assembly will not clear a purge unit if its jammed with paper, paper clips, push pins, screws, cookie crisp, flower bud pods or the like. And yes I have found all those things in a purge unit. The offending item needs to be removed or the purge unit needs replacement. A Pixma MP830 would still be under Canon warranty, get it into a shop and save yourself the hassel. Incidently, the 6A00 error pertains to all Canon printers made in the last several years, its not just used in one model. And its always a paper path error or purge unit.
I forget myself so here goes, the purge unit, called a spittoon assembly in an HP, lexmark, and other inkjet printers, is where the print head assembly parks when not in use, also its other job is to clean and make sure the print head is clean and open for printing. That is why you'll find the print head assembly parked on top of it. It also has a an electrical pump to milk the print heads and test for ink flow.

6A00 is a problem with the sheet feed unit.
Follow Canon's suggestion, take it or send the unit UPS to the Authorized Repair Facility.
You will NOT be able to resolve the problem yourself.

Problem lies with either the sheet feed or the cartridge return tray.
With the power off try lifting the lid to the printer and manually slide the cartridge tray left and right.
You may have to clean all ink residue, move the tray back to its most right position and close everything.
problem with the carriage assembly. Go to www.beckscrs.com. and
see in parts if they list it,
try to fit it in a proper mode

Try doing this turn off the printer and open the replacement ink compartment, move the inks holder far to the left- use a torch to check where the inks holder home and you'll see that there is a sponge a tiny rectangular shape come loose ,use the twiter and put back in place .

As previously stated, with the error light blinking or the power cord dis-connected,I cant
manually pull the ink tanks out to center where they would be to change cartridges. Has anyone got an exploded diagram of the parts? I can't get it apart.
I've taken it outside and poured 2 jugs of hot water over the cartridges & carrier but to no avail.
Sometimes it ratchetts in the gears, trying to drive the works.
Thanks "robby". It seems I,m looking in the right place. It is an mp800 purchased Jan.06.For 2 weeks prior to the jam up,it would give me that error code & I'd switch off & on the scanner lock then it would be alright for a day.I've undone all the screws but without a drawing will have to use a hacksaw to get it apart.
Thank you all for your guidance so far.I cannot see any pads or wipers with the machine assembled & the ink tank lodged hard on the right.I need to get the back off or top off to gain access to the problem. I've undone all the screws, section at a time & the plastic sections seem to be clipped or glued in.I should see a layout befour I cut away.
Thanks irish druid but I think I would have to clamp a piece of 3 by 2 across the top then use a 2 foot jemmy bar to get the ink tank out of park position.
Thanks Ginco,
I had to get it ton pieces to find the wiper pad under the tank carrier had stood on end & jammed the ink tank carrier.
I now have all the part No's and am waiting for pricing from the parts dealer.Canon Aust.don't carry parts or do repairs. They farm them out.
The printer has been in the hands of a mob of experts in Adelaide for 2 weeks. They say they can't find the fault but the parts to fit on a trial & error basis would cost more than a new machine, over $400
I pick it up from them today & should have those parts prices from Queensland also.
