HI! WELL, AFTER MUCH DIGGING I HAVE DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON ERROR AND HAS ALL SORTS OF CAUSES AND POSSIBLE CURES. THE BEST I WAS ABLE TO DETERMINE IS IT IS A LENS ERROR. BY THIS THEY IMPLY THAT THE LENS EITHER GOT BUMPED, STUCK, SOME DIRT IN IT, BUMPED OUT OF ALIGNMENT, NOT EXTENDED ALL THE WAY BECAUSE OF WEAK BATTERIES?, DROPPED, SOMEHOW OBSTRUCTED AND ON AND ON. IT APPEARS THAT IT IS POSSIBLE TO RESET THE ERROR BY POWERING DOWN THE CAMERA THEN BACK ON A NUMBER OF TIMES, GENTLY TRYING TO ALIGN THE LENS WITH THE POWER ON, GENTLY TURNING THE LENS? THAT'S WHAT IT SAID!, CLEANING THE LENS WITH AIR, WIPING THE LENS AND USING THE A/V CABLE CONNECTION. I TAKE THIS TO BE THE OUTPUT CABLE? THERE DOESN'T SEEM TO BE ANY SET PROCEEDURE AND THEY STATE IF ALL ELSE FAILS IF WOULD NEED TO BE REPAIRED, WHICH THEY CLAIMED WAS RATHER EXPENSIVE. NOT MUCH HELP, BUT THIS IS RIGHT FROM THE SOURCE. THE E18 ERROR IS KIND OF LIKE THE BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH ON YOUR COMPUTER. ANYTHING GOES, THE WAY THEY SOUND.VERY COMMON, ALWAYS WITH SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE LENS OR LENS COVER, ALTHOUGH I DON'T SEE HOW THE COVER COULD CAUSE AN ERROR, UNLESS YOU LEFT IT ON WHEN YOU TRIED TO SHOOT! MAN, I HOPE THIS MAKES SOME SENSE TO YOU, BECAUSE IT WAS REALLY A CONFUSING MESS TO SORT THROUGH.

Hey there,

The code E18 indicates that pressure has been applied to the zoom lens, lens barrier, or immediate area. Canon suggests that if turning camera on and off, then on again does not clear the problem, or the error code shows up frequently, a camera malfunction has occured. They suggest you bring it in for service.

Good Luck!

Cannon Powershot S21S is stuck on on/ A message E18 came up on the blank screen in the let hand corner. changed the batteries plus the lithium battery.

Hi,

"E18" indicates an error that involves the lens unit or lens cover in your camera .This error appears where the lens is prevented from properly extending or retracting .The error may also be displayed if the lens camera has been subjected to an external shock, or if a foreign substance (i.e. liquid, sand, dirt) enters the camera.Hold the camera so that your fingers do not touch the lens unit when you are shooting. Make sure the camera is off before the camera is placed back in the case. Exercise caution to ensure that the camera does not accidentally power on while the camera is stored inside the case.If you cannot clear the error code by turning the camera off and then on again, or if the error code is displayed frequently, a camera malfunction may have occurred and might require service from canon.Or else try pressing the power button on and held it down while extending the zoom lens. The lens will extend out and the camera will be freed from the error.

Thank you !!

Power shot SD20 digital camera When the on switch is depressed a short musical tone plays and then it stops after about 5 seconds and E18 appears on the screen momentarily before the camera turns off.

E18 is the standard Canon lens error. The lens gets stuck when extending. If you did not drop it and there are no signs of damage you can check with Canon and try to get the camera repaired under warranty.

If it is not covered here are a few methods to try on your own, at your own risk.

MY CANON POWER SHOT A 80 DONT WORK

Lens errors (E18 errors on Canons) are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

Sounds like you have a bad CCD. You can try contacting Canon to check out your options on how to get this repaired. Unfortunately the S2IS is not on their CCD recall list of cameras.

E 18 problem

the E18 means the lens system has a problem. I had it with my S2 and sometimes it worked, sometimes not. Eventually it stopped working. The only solution was sending it to repair, they changed the lens system.

Best Regards
