Attempting to load but suddenly shut off..

Hello,

My name is Asheba. I own a ECS A535 PC Notebook which I purchased in September of 2005. The problem that I am experiencing is that when press the start button to turn on the computer it attemts to load but then it suddenly shuts off. It was working this morniing and this evening when I tried to turn it on it stated beeping really loud then there was a message on the screen that read "someone is using your computer if you shut it down they will lose all of thier data. So I clicked ok. Then when I tried to turn it back on about five mintues later I started experiencing the problem mentioned above.

Its been plug up for days thats why I dont understand why it went off. Its been working okay until this evening...Do you think I may need a new battery because it sounds like its about to come on and it lights up but then it suddenly click completely off. I dont know what else to do . Tell me this is there any chance that I could have possibly over charged the computer?

Noticed the problem also. I noticed I had left the power plug out and the batteries went down very quickly. I also have had a similar problem with bad batteries even with the power plug in place.

It sounds like the laptop was in a screen off state (happens when it is left on but not used for a while).  When you pushed the power button it went to shutdown, and notified you that someone (you) is still logged on.  Any unsaved work could be lost, hence the warning.
Five minutes later when you went to switch it back on, the laptop coincidently must be low on battery, to the point where it will not stay on, and exhibits the problem you are experiencing now.  Try plugging in to power and make sure that the battery is charging, and try again.

No, you cannot overcharge a computer, and it seems unlikely that it is the battery causing this problem.  You can try it without the battery in the laptop to test the theory.  You can also try it with the battery in but no external power attached.

However, in this case I would say that it sounds like it could be the motherboard (eg RAM) or a component that plugs into it that is playing up.  The following items pop into mind as suspect:

    1. The motherboard itself

    2. The RAM

    3. The CPU

    4. A Fan

Unfortunately it can be difficult to diagnose these yourself from home.  I would recommend taking it in somewhere for a quote - most places should charge a minimal quotation fee on the repair, and charge no quotation fee if you go ahead with the repair.

At best it could be a fan that has stopped working (or similar) and this causes the CPU to heat up.  A CPU that is too hot will switch off.  I have seen this before when the CPU fan actually broke from it's mounting.  On a laptop the CPU overheats almost instantly without a fan.

At worst it is the motherboard and could mean a $400-$500 repair bill (AU$).

Good news is that your data should be safe and you can easily retrieve it yourself if you do not want to pay someone to do it - Google 2.5" drive caddy's.

It has a 40 GB hard drive, a DVD drive, 14.1 inch XGA screen and XP Home. The external ports include 4 USB ports, 1 parallel port, 1 S-video TV out, 1 VGA out, 1 microphone in and 1 headphone out.
